Incidentally on the sunday, the day after i had arrived, it was lashing with rain and high winds. This pleb and his family went out in their car all day. I watched as guylines on his tent came loose, and slowly his tent disintagrated thgroughout the day. Now ordinarily, if i saw guylines coming loose on a neighbouring tent, and the owner was out, i would knock the pegs in to secure it. When he came back, i sat in the doorway of my van drinking a cup of tea, watching him with glee, rearecting his by now damaged tent.
I was about to say "Oh, I wouldn`t have done that!!"....but then again, I might have been sorely tempted and yup, I might have let it go down.
Bad camping karma, though.....

Hey
Only me again - just realised I come over like a whinging old bat! I'm not really, honest! Am just asking for a little understanding for those of us with toddlers!! Plus am really hoping to see some smiling people at the next site. Not had very pleasurable experience so far!!
Tess
From our experience you get good and bad, but we have found more friendly than not. On our last trip apart from the Honey Monster incident we have contact details for a nice couple we met on a site nr Sidmouth, he was an areobatic pilot and they were looking for a new Spaniel pup, we spent at least two hours chatting at Hillhead Brixham just about Staffie's. Lots of Hymer talk at Ilfracombe. We have bumped into the same couple that we met at the New Forest three or four times now, who go out deer watching with the Rotty and Staffy, and the list goes on..... Think you hae just been unlucky.

hey!
Having just read through all the postings on this topic as a newcomer to the whole motorhoming thing, I wonder if i can have a say.
my husband and I have only been away 3 times so far, along with our small dog and 2 year old daughter. We have been struck mainly by the standoffish nature of other motorhome and caravan owners. I remember the campsites of my youth being lively places where children did run around playing, and where if somebody was struggling with awnings etc somebody would always offer help.
On this site I have seen that there are many helpfull people still out there, with sense of humour etc.but recent experience has slightlydampened my enthusiasm for sites.
We have a geriatic motorhome, and are complete novices. Out of three weekends the only approachable people we have met were also new to their caravan. We have spent the entire time on knife edge due to the dissapproving glares we get if our daughter dares to make a fuss or have a tantrum. She is two - thats what two year olds do!! These same people however seem to not mind if our dog barks a little, perhaps as many of them also own dogs?
Is this typical or have we just been unlucky? I came home the last time more stressed that when we left as my little angel was particularly grumpy this weekend - so we spent most of our time pandering to her as I would never do at home just to keep the peace!!
Aww that's a shame that you have been surrounded by grumpy people (would have said gits but I was accused of having an attitude last time I used that word!)
Stick with it,there are some nice, normal folk out there who are friendly and will help you out if you are struggling with something.
We did all sorts of daft things when we first started out,and we still do daft things now, wouldn't worry too much about making the odd mistake.First time we went out we thought that if we kept moving around the site we would eventually get a signal for our telly with a built in freeview, the warden watched us try four different pitches before he told us there was no digital signal in that area! Doooh, how dumb is that!
I also accused someone of selling me an empty gas bottle when my regulator was jiggered!
So you are not alone!
Better luck next trip!
Val
