going slightly off the camping and caravaning topic, please could anybody help me as i cannot find info about this anywhere on the net and the DVLA phone number is always engaged.

We wanted to buy/rent a motorhome to travel france in (me and a few mates) but as we're all under 25, nobody wanted to rent to us. so we jumped at the oppertunity to buy a minibus for £600. but..... its hard to get insured as well. and some companies require us to get the D1 liscence!!

to get to the point.... it has 15 seats which is the factor that means we need D1's and a hefty insurance sum. If we remove 7 seats, so that is and 8 seater, will we be able to register the minibus as having 8 seats? and will we be able to drive it without a D1 and get cheaper insurance?

thanks for your time, sam

HI SAM

all you have to do is remove the required ammount of seats take the miniobus for it,s new mot as an 8 seater then send the v5 to swansea on the ANY CHANGES part of the v5 9 LOG BOOK) SIMPLY STATE IT IS NOW AN 8 SEATER.

You will have the v5 sent back to you showing the alterations.

absolutely brilliant! i was hoping for a positive answer. i found something on the net that said i have to prove that it will never be used as a minibus again. is this just the official rules that they dont really stick to?

thanks for the info, i wish i lived in a town where every resident was a member of this forum as everyone is so friendly :)

welll now the road traffic act is a complicated thing to grasp, only because it,s been changed so many times that people can,t get used to changes quick enough.

No i am not a member of the police force .

just a qualified instructor.

What the mot is saying is that the vehicle is 8 seats when the log book is altered you are agreeing that it is now an 8 seater not a 15 seater the extra space you have accumilated is now for carrying a payload shopping etc.

I had no problem with mine at all worse case scenario would be a trip to the local licencing office for a bod to look at it and nod his head in agreeance . Some people just send in the logbook showing the changes and also an accompanying invoice from their local garage showing an ammount to remove the seats and stating the origional seats and the new seating ammount .

but i dont know if the latter works but proof positive of the first working because i have done it , and it,s the honest route to take .
