Sorry to be unfashionable, but we've just traded in our old Kontiki for a Hobby 690 through Brownhills in Newark. The service we received, and are still receiving, has been second to none. And we were given a reasonable price for our old girl against the replacement.

I entered the deal with Brownhills knowing their reputation for poor post-sales service so wondered if I was doing the right thing. That was 3 weeks ago and so far can't fault the way they handled the deal. Of course I've been lucky; my new 'van has proven itself in that time, so I haven't needed to test the warrantee - yet. Perhaps when I have a problem my view will be different, but at the moment I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Where I question conventional wisdom is over the term "German Quality."

My Hobby is German built, right hand drive for the UK market, but the finish and thought gone into the habitation area falls well below the standard of my old 1991 Kontiki. The layout design is excellent, but silly items let it down, such as locker catches, light switches, roof ventilation, door retainers (none) and even the manual which is in German only. (Ever tried to translate a technical handbook in Babelfish or Google?). Unfortunately I can't blame Brownhills for the German's lack of flair.

By the way - I don't work for Brownhills. But I'm happy with them.

There must be satisfied customers otherwise Brownhills wouldn't still be there. I live a stones throw from Newark and knew the original owner when he started down by the river.Sainsburys offered him a furtune for the site but he was doing so well he declined and eventually moved to the site they are are now when he sold out. We all used to meet in one of the local pubs for "early doors" including his brother who had one of the first mobiles, it was like a brick but he carried it everywhere. He was getting complaints but dealt with them. A nice man made good (& a furtune). As I understand it  Brownhills is owned by "the banks" now but that is high finance &is beyond me! I always dealt with Oaktree motors and until they also expanded, had great relationships with them and their staff. Not anymore, it's all changed. Such a shame when good companies are spoilt by their own success. But good luck with your German mhome. Get in touch with Hobby direct & I am sure you will get whatever you want. THEY DO SPEAK ENGLISH.

Hi rogerangie

you dont happen to know what condition the showground is in do by any chance arriving at noon tomorrow dont fancy sinking down to the axles

Brownhills is just a sales & p.d.i. pitch, if the makers took more pride in their product no one would need to complain.

I have a mercedes E class & that has stupid faults that should'nt happen

Sorry Silverwood. The roads round here are to say the least, dodgy. The Trent is still rising, lots of Newark is flooded but as to the showground, I dont know. My wekend in Shropshire is off, the farm is under water!
