We just returned from our first tour around Europe in our MH. Now the first thing that struck my wife and I was that there are hell of a lot more motorhomes on european roads than there are caravans. On campsites, caravans are are very tightly packed together and have to be man handled into position. There simply isn't the space reversing in tow.
Yes with caravans, your left with the car for sight seeing, but this too can be a nightmare finding a parking space. MH's on the other hand have their own dedicated parking allowing overnight parking in the heart of the town or city for as little as 5euro a night or even free.
As for petrol versus diesel, well diesel wins everytime, driving an MH or towing a van you really need a gutzy diesel when tackling the seemingly endless climbs on European motorways. Oh and remember towing caravan your treated like a juggernaut and have much srticter speed limits and NOT allowed to overtake when dictated by the signs.
I like other writers think hiring a motorhome for a week would be an excellent idea, take a trip down to the Alps then ask yourself if you would like to be towing van.
