Due to the abysmal weather this year my wife and I want to get rid of our tent so are currently discussing purchasing a campervan. Now I’m not sure if this will make sense but its defiantly a camper we are after not a motor home as we want to use it as a family car as well (is this wise?). We are thinking along the lines of a VW Caravelle conversion. It must be four berth + diesel powered and we will only be spending £10000 + our car. Does any body know of any good web sites we can start looking at. Thanks in advance.

Anthony,

We've just spent a coupe of weeks browsing E-bay, Autotrader, Pre-loved and this site in order to get a feel for what was what, prices etc and we're glad we spent the time to do the research; it's amazing how much information you absorb without realising it!

We had similar considerations to you - second car, not as big as a coach-built. We've just bought a lovely little 1992 VW Trident (based on the T4 Transporter I think) Auto sleeper off Autotrader which is a 2+2 into which we can cram ourselves and the 2 little ones plus it has a drive-away awning that's like half a tent including a sleeping area if necessary. That was £8.5K.

I'm sure other more experienced owners will have better ideas of where to look.

All the best,

Mike

Hi Isotoz

Well I could reccomend a Mazda Bongo/Ford Freda but I dont really think that they could be referred to as a four berth.I regard mine as a 3 berth but also have an awning which adds another 2 berths with an inner tent.Had mine for 12 mths this week and its been superb with no problems at all. There are lots of other makes to choose from so take your time but I do think for price and overall condition a converted Bongo does take some beating.I also use mine for commuting too,the size being a bit smaller than the VWs making it an ideal compromise for weekends away and daily travelling, and still carry 5 people in comfort.

Best place to start is www.bongofury.co.uk there are some very good members vehicles for sale at present on there which are well within your budget.

Good Luck with your search

MM Dave

That's a funny thing.  I've posted that I'm doing the complete opposite - getting rid of my camper and buying a tent

Some of the larger deallers web sites are quite useful for getting a feel of whats on offer. Also useful for brousing different layouts etc. There are lots of different van conversions about, not all have 4 seatbelted seats though.

As for buying the following are good sources of info once you know better what you want

www.loot.com

www.preloved.com

http://www.com/classifieds/hightops_plus.htm

You can get quite a lot for £10k+,  our first vam was a bedford rascal costing £3k, loads of fun, now have an A/S Harmony which has the luxury of a loo on board.

happy Hunting

Jules
