  We're currently looking for a new motorhome (around 3 to 5 years old)  and we were considering a Kon-tiki with a rear lounge but have had second thoughts when we were told by someone "you know what the call kon-tiki's don't you? leaky kon-tiki's!!"

  We would like a kon-tiki but we would like to hear from either current kon-tiki owners or previous kon-tiki owners and if you had any prolems with water ingress?

As for the KonTiki, well they are really respected motorhomes if not a little pricey, therefore wouldn't of though ingress would be a problem no more than anything else.

   that's exactly what we were thinking (about the kon-tiki water ingress not the petrol prices) but we were just concerned about his comments.

ps. when are you coming over for a brew?

I have a 660 on 55 plate and have had no problems with water ingress.

At the moment I do have an annual habitation check.  When the three year period is up I will purchase a quality damp tester and use frquently

We have just traded our 3 year old Kontiki 645 in for an Auto Trail and we never had any problems with her leaking or anything major like that. We had her from new and she was a beautiful vehicle and I can thoroughly recommend the Kontiki models. I am sure if you buy one you will not be disappointed as they are lovely and we were very satisfied with ours. We had the rear lounge model too with the over the cab pull down bed and it was very spacious but we have gone for a fixed bed model now so that is the only reason we have changed.

I can honestly say I have never heard the quote "leaky Kontiki's" before so it can't be that common a problem? I think some people only have to hear of one vehicle with this problem and instead of thinking it is a one off they tar all that maufacturers models with the same brush!

I've got a 1998 Bessacarr E695 (v similar thing to KonTiki, built in the same factory) and it's still dry as a bone. It's the rear lounge job, with front dinette and kitchen, and another double over the cab. Brilliant layout that suits us down to the ground.

I think the 'Leaki KonTiki' gibe is just a play on words (also heard Leaky Lunar and Soggy Swift bandied about), but at the end of the day any motorhome or caravan CAN leak, so it pays to take a very careful look around before parting with your money.

We bought a Kontiki - G Reg - two years ago, even after having seen water stain marks on the ceiling. The guy at the dealership said that it HAD had a leak problem on the roof but that it had been sorted. The asking price was 12,000, and, knowing no different- it was our first motorhome - we bought it. One week later not only did it leak along the whole line of rivets across the roof but also from a ruptured waterpipe under the flooring. Needless to say we were soon on the phone to get our money back, which we did, and then bought a '99 Swift Sundance 590RL, which has been very enjoyable, having had it Turbo'd at TB Turbo and soon to have it reupholstered. We are, in hindsight, very grateful that the Kontiki DID leak..it helped point us in the right direction

We were told soon after by a few people that the Kontiki was known as the 'Leaky Kontiki'
