Hi, have a look in the camping abroad section - particularly the 2 stickies for 1st timers and driving abroad. There's lots of good stuff in there, get back with anything you don't understand.

I think you have to just take in to consideration where you want to go and how many miles you would like to travel per day.
We are leaving for the south of france next Wednesday pm. The first problem is our location from Dover, a 5 hour drive in good traffic, remember you are in a MH and not in a car so your average speed is going to be so much slower. We stay at Dover overnight and get a ferry around 8am anything earlier than that tends to be a rush in the morning. when in france the roads are excellent but a lot will depend on whether you want to fly down the autoroutes or see a bit of country. We are overnighting just south of Paris which is again about 4-5 hours depending on traffic. If you use the autoroutes then expect to pay for the privelege possibly about Ģ50 to go right through to the south (although fuel is cheaper). In my experience driving anymore than 5 hours per day becomes a bit of a chore. We tend to get up early and drive for up to 5 hours making sure we are parked up on a site to enjoy the midday sun. If you dont have aircon you can get very hot under the collar driving in the afternoon. Even with two drivers we find that just being a passanger can be tiring. We once took on a 16 hour drive shared between the two of us to get home. On arriving home we felt like another holiday.
So in short my advice would be use the MH for what it's built touring, nice smaller journeys taking your time to get where your destination is. This is of course not say you couldn't drive through to Spain whithin a couple of days, just that when we have done it that way we found it hard work.
We did it last year and ended up going as far as Barcelona. Used the "TOM TOM" and have to say it was good, did non toll there and toll most of the way back. We are off agin this Sunday 12th Aug 9.30am ferry to Calais, counting the seconds down. We ended up staying quite a few days on a camp site at Santa Susanna on the Costa Brava, really good. We stopped a few times on non toll main services with no problems. Barcelona is well worth a visit and there is motorhome parking at the northern end on the coast, it is a lorry park basically but it has showers, hook ups and good security with the tramway 10yards away. Just enjoy....
Thanks guys for all your good advice, It all seems very dawnting having never been over the waters before but i surpose i up for a challenge, We leave on the 20th to probably stay overnight at dover and catch an early boat and play it by ear lol when we get over there. Once agaian thanks alot.
We have just done 10 days in France for the very first time I was very nervous and apprehensive about doing it,we had a fantastic time. No problems with driving on the right, no problems with parking, found the French people very helpful and charming. Just remember Bum in the Gutter. Have a fantastic holiday like we had, cant wait for the next time, after a day I felt like I had always driven on the right.
