I want to get my van serviced before the winter. Is it better to go to a campervan specialist or just use a regular garage. Does anyone know of any reliable (and not too pricey) campervan specialists in Sussex?

Thanks

Hi,

You will need to go to an "ordinary" garage for the mechanical servicing of the base vehicle, and to a motorhome/caravan specialist for servicing and checking the onboard equipment that forms the motorhome conversion - the gas, electrics, and other equipment that has nothing to do with an unconverted vehicle - known as the habitation service.  (And the garage that carries out the VW servicing will have to be one that can accommodate vans, of course -not all car servicing garages can, because of the extra height.)  Sorry I can't recommend anywhere in Sussex though.  When I had a VW camper the mechanical servicing was done by my local garage but it was an elevating roof model and they can't take high tops or coach builts.  As for the habitation work, I used a place near Chichester - this one, click - but to be honest I wasn't very impressed even though they are CC approved.  (Nowadays I go "abroad" into Hampshire!)

Having just looked their website, I see Southern Caravans do now offer mechanical servicing as well as habitation checks.  If they're convenient for you by all means give them a try, although as I said I wasn't too impressed with the standard of their habitation work on my old VW van.  They ticked off the gas check boxes but I don't think they could have inspected the gas system because a few months later I had to replace the flexible hose connection to gas cylinder, which had perished and split, and the Camping Gaz gas regulator which was leaking.  Now OK, the regulator might have gone anytime but I don't believe the perished hose wasn't showing signs of wear when it was allegedly passed fit for purpose.  What's more when I took it in and said there was a gas leak, they replaced the hose and gave me the van back without picking up the leaking regulator - I had to go back again that same day to have it replaced after I got home and found that I still had a gas leak!   Maybe I was just unlucky with them.........there again, maybe not.
