Has anyone converted their habitation over to LPG and if so, how have you found it? We are seriously thinking of getting our new Auto Trail converted when we get her in 10 days time and would welcome your opinions. We have been informed that it is a lot cheaper and easier to refill your gas bottles if you use LPG and also, if you tour Europe, which we do during the winter months we have been told that LPG is widely available throughout most European destinations.

We have been quoted approx £350 to £400 to have the total conversion done and this is for 2 x 11 kg size bottles etc.

Hi Sooh - as you've had no replies to your question I'll throw in my two penneth.

I don't have refillable lpg in my Hymer but I do run a car on it so some of the issues relating to that are also relevant to your plans.

First, availability. There are maps and gps files available showing lpg stations through out the uk. Coverage is reasonable but it can be difficult to find in scotland and country areas so you need to plan accordingly.

Yes you can get it abroad but there are different adapters for different countries but your supplier should be able to sell you whichever you need for the countries you visit.

Not all european countries have lpg readily available for refill. Spain especially is basically a no no. France , Holland great but there is loads of info on the net.

Finally money. Yes its cheap but at the moment rising a little (50% over the last 18 months to about 45p a litre) but still lots cheaper than bottle refills.

Don't forget to do the maths as to whether the cost of installation will be recovered by the savings made but you may think that the need not to fiddle with and carry heavy bottles is a cost worth paying.

Good luck - let us know what happens.

We had our van converted in March before we went to Europe for 3 months.Great absolutely no problems with it and much cheaper than the cylinders. Here it is £7.00 to fill up against £15 to change a cylinder. In France /Portugal( not in SPAIN very few places.)it was about 7 Euro but we just toped it up when we were in getting fuel. Its well worth getting it in.We got some other fittings for Europe which we needed to use for filling up .We have 7k bottles our locker can`t take any bigger ones didn`t cost us that much cylinders are about £90 each but the chap that fitted ours is a friend so just paid for the fittings .

I have a Auto trail Mohican and converted the habitation over to refillable LPG 3 years ago.

I installed the Gaslow bottles 2 x 11KG no fancy change over valves just the two bottles onto the 37 bar gaslow regulator.

I have one turned off as you would with a conventional set up so I basically have one on reserve.

The filler is fitted inside the gas locker on a bracket so no holes have to be drilled in the outside of the van.

The bottles on filling both fill automatically and cut off at 80%.

I have both filler adaptors for the continent the standard filler works on uk pumps as standard.

As for cost I save approximately £5 to £7 on a fill but dont have to lug bottles about.

initial outlay cost me £250 but eventually it pays for itself and can be removed and placed in new van.

It took me approx 3 hours to install the system including manufacturing the the bracket, I believe now gaslow make brackets that connect to the bottles so the filler can be mounted inside.

I would never go back to the old system i am cannot fault Gaslow.

There are lots of filling stations on the continent with LPG much cheqaper than over here.

internet links for gaslow and lpg stations in uk.
