Is it possible to acquire a motorhome on motability instead of a car? A small type is required in the 5 meter range.

Hi Donaidh
I think you may be able to claim vat back if you are registered as disabled, have a check on the internet. Not sure about the motability scheme.

I think you`ll find Motability only supply cars or maybe motorhomes like   for example the size of a Romahome ,especially if you have to have adaptions i,e.ramps, swivel seat etc.If you`re  registered for the mobility portion of Disability Allowance you get a new vehicle Vat exempted and also again if you qualify free Road Tax Hope this helps but check with Motability Operations they`re very helpful

Thanks for your kind replies. I am recently disabled and trying to still get about. I have bought a caravan but whether I get a little help from fellow caravaners to moor it I think a motorhome will be the only thing. Thanks again Donaidh (Don)

I too am disabled but we have a caravan and since having the marvellous Powrtouch motor mover fitted last year......WHEY HEY!!!!!

For the first time in years, I can really be useful in the hitching and pitching malarky!

Yours truly moves the w-h-o-l-e rather large and very heavy, (1300kg), tin tent on me owny o with just the use of me two thumbs

Ok so........I still need hubby to lock the rollers onto the wheels BUT I believe ya can get a remote thingy version, (probably not a Powrtouch though?), to sort this out, although as ya know, campers are a nice bunch and ya'd probably be inundated with offers of help and even if ya weren't.....a simple request to anybody would probably bring forth the same response.

In fact, ya could ask about the possible assistance when ya book onto any site.

There's at least one site I am pretty sure would be more than happy to help as it's family run and simply.....lovely. Make ya feel more like a friend from the moment you arrive than just a name and reservation number.....Tregarton Park. Lovely bunch of peeps there

As for the motablity idea of a M/H....wish this was possible coz I'm due to trade me Zafira in next year, (that'll be it's 3 years lease up with them), and I'd LOVE a liccle M/H! It'd mean that I could just whizz off at the drop of a hat whenever the fancy takes me and even take the pooch with me and....leave hubby at home Him and his coaching committments are the reason we only ever get the tin tent away for 2 weeks each year...but don't get me started

The only saving when purchasing a motorhome when disabled is that you pay NO VAT. That is a sizeable sum of money though, but of course it means that you have to purchase a new one and there is the depreciation to think of.   These two factors will probably cancel each other out.

As it works at the moment, is that you use your DLA payments to meet the hire cost of the Mobility Car. What you could do is not have a mobility car, but keep the DLA payments instead. Currently the higher rate of DLA is £45 per week. You could then get a bank loan for a Camper Van/Motorhome, and use these payments to pay it off. Also you do not pay VAT on a new vehicle, this saves you £1,750 for every £10,000 you spend.

Even if you bought an older secondhand motorhome, you could use your DLA to finance a loan over a number of years. It really depends on how friendly you are with your bank manager.

Ta for the suggestion Jeff, but tbph, we only opted, (finally), for the motability vehicle two years ago when hubby needed to trade his old banger in but we didn't want to go down the bank loan route so he inherited my Vectra and I got the brand new motor. Lovely it is too, I have to say.

But another consideration too, (apart from hubby being 'retired' which happened when he was 50 from the police, so only his pension and no 'earnings'), is that not only does motability mean that I do not have to pay my own road tax, (which happened with me Vectra anyhoo before going on motability as it does when you're on DLA and get the higher rate for the mobility part), but more importantly.......I don't have to pay me own insurance either and as ya can appreciate, that's a heck of a saving! Dread to think what that would cost for a M/H!!!!

I may, however, try to go for a car more suited to being a tow vehicle when I get the new one next year coz hubby's, (mine as was), Vectra could really do with replacing and it'd be more cost effective to just get him a smaller cc run around, (he does do an awful lot of driving with his diving), for him to use and have mine as the tow vehicle as it was before. Have to see when it gets nearer to me swapping it in.

Blimey! I only popped on here for an 'ultra quick' squiz and I've worn meself out now

Hippy....

Yes your right, you would have to pay your own insurance with what i suggested. But motorhome insurance is not very dear. I only pay £230 fully comp for a 30K motorhome. Older motorhomes are extremely cheap to insure.

But i see your point, you may be better off having a Mobility Car and getting a caravan. Secondhand caravans can be bought for peanuts these days.

Ohhhhh Jeff! We've already GOT a tin tentIn fact we had to part with our much loved 1989 Esprit which we'd had since new when we got this one brand new in 2005, hence the reason we no longer have any savings left to get a new tow car

Look.....here it was at Tregarton Park for the last two weeks in August this year.
