The MOT is now due on my Hymer 644G. It is the first MOT I will be putting it through since buying it last February. However, after doing all the obvious checks I notice that the driver side fog light is completely missing!
The small round lens on the front valance is there, but only some loose wires and nothing else behind it!! God knows what happened to it! The passenger side works however. Is it a condition that the fog lights be in working order, does one light pass? or am I right in thinking that if you have them, they have to work? Which begs the question: if I remove them both, then all should be ok?
You only need a rear fog light for the MOT. Front fog lights are beyond the remit of the MOT scheme.

My understanding of lighting and the M.O.T would be that if the vehicle is U.K. registered the rear fog light must be on the offside and front fog lights must be fitted and working in PAIRS. One way round the front foglight missing is to disconect the working one to pass the M.O.T till you can get round to sorting them both out. The M.O.T is getting more and more advanced each year, and rightly so. Good luck.

Front fog lights are NOT tested on an MOT. Rear ones are. You either need a pair or if only one is fitted it has to be either in the centre or offside.
Hope this clarifies matters for you.

I had a Renault Megane a few years back and it failed due to Front Fog lights not working. His explanation was, that if they were fitted they must work. I took them off, resubmitted the car and they passed it.

You should have appealed. The tester exceeded his authority.

My bold - if they're fitted then they must work
Not true. Only obligatory lights are tested on the MOT.

he was wrong, obligatory lamps only should be checked.
Having said that, to answer Farrier, the easiest way is to ask the MOT inspector what he thinks before he tests it, then if you need to argue you can before he's written out the paperwork.
