Anyone had experience of using an external generator (Honda 2.2KW)on a Motorhome to charge batteries etc. when Wild Camping? The vehicle is a Hymer 644 and i am wondering whether it could damage the electronics if not used correctly. I have the necessary leads to connect to the external connection on the Motorhome.

Thanks in anticipation! Any tips would be appreciated.

Dollyannie, I used to use a small Honda generator when wild camping in our Minnie Winnie. I simply made up an electrical connector cable to fit between the genny and the standard 240v inlet feed that you would normally use to couple to the on-site mains. I always chained and locked the genny to the bumper! It ran all the lighting, kept the leisure battery topped up and even ran a low powered hair dryer. The portable telly also worked OK on 240v with no interference. I once ran the batteries way, wat down following a badly slipping fanbelt. All was dead , but in the middle of a very dark Shropshire the genny , once coupled up quickly restored life. It was worth it , just for that one time only. Now with our much more compact Trigano Tribute, we have not , as yet found the need for another genny but wouldn't hesitate if we start wild camping again. Hope this helps

Dollyannie here is a link to an excellent website www.justgenerators.co.uk/ This company called Just Generators are ideal for anyone wishing to purchase a generator and if you ring them they are so helpful and will answer any questions or concerns you may have. We bought our Honda EU20i from them and the service and delivery we found was excellent and I can highly reccomend them.

Hope this helps.

The Honda EU2i will do almost everything you want it hasnt got the flaw as the  EU1i which has the problem with tripping when used with a microwaves initial surge.

Only downside is the weight if you only want to charge batteries a smaller unit would suffice with a good inverter and a decent bank of batteries .

Thats the way i have gone 4x 85amps and a high powered inverter and a 650watt generator.

Sometimes security of the generator is a problem like French Aires when you want to power the sky box and TV off A/c the inverter comes into its own.

Food for thought.

I bought a genny when we had campervans. Only used it twice. Once to charge someone elses flat car battery and once to chrge someones elses mobile phone.

A waste of money in our opinion.

I suppose it's like anything LobeyDosser - if you purchase something you don't use or have no use for, then it is a waste of money - but for those that do use them then of course it is money well spent and they will find understandably find a generator to be a very useful piece of equipment.

I think if you stay on campsites most of the time or dont attend rallys or other events where electric hook ups are NOT generally provided then you will not really see the point of a generator or maybe if you have a smaller outfit then your lesiure batteries are power enough for a couple of days. But for folk like us, who like the whole freedom which motorhoming can offer you, then a generator certainly comes into its own on many occasions and it can allow you to be totally self sufficient where power is concerned. We just love to wildcamp where we are able to and have stayed in some idyllic settings and having a generator can prove to be really advantageous if this is something you enjoy doing. Obviously, we are considerate motorhomers and would never dream of using our generator where it is likely to cause anyone else a problem but the times we use ours are mainly when we are in the middle of nowhere and not likely to cause any noise problems to anyone else or if we are attending an event where others are using theirs too and only then during permitted hours!

So - yes while I agree with you that for someone who has no real reason to use a generator they are a total waste of money  - please bear in mind for those of us who do have a reason to own one - they are a very good investment!

Sue

The EU10i hasn't got a flaw it's just that a microwave requires more than the 900W continuous rating of the generator.
I use a Honda EU10i with our Hymer no need to worry about damaging the vehicle electrics.

We use a honda genny eu10i if you are worried about damaging electrics in m/h we always turn off the electric on fuse board in m/h then start genny then plug in lead then their is no chance of a power surge damaging your electrical equipment.
Hope this helps
