A waste of money in our opinion.
I suppose it's like anything LobeyDosser - if you purchase something you don't use or have no use for, then it is a waste of money - but for those that do use them then of course it is money well spent and they will find understandably find a generator to be a very useful piece of equipment.
I think if you stay on campsites most of the time or dont attend rallys or other events where electric hook ups are NOT generally provided then you will not really see the point of a generator or maybe if you have a smaller outfit then your lesiure batteries are power enough for a couple of days. But for folk like us, who like the whole freedom which motorhoming can offer you, then a generator certainly comes into its own on many occasions and it can allow you to be totally self sufficient where power is concerned. We just love to wildcamp where we are able to and have stayed in some idyllic settings and having a generator can prove to be really advantageous if this is something you enjoy doing. Obviously, we are considerate motorhomers and would never dream of using our generator where it is likely to cause anyone else a problem but the times we use ours are mainly when we are in the middle of nowhere and not likely to cause any noise problems to anyone else or if we are attending an event where others are using theirs too and only then during permitted hours!
So - yes while I agree with you that for someone who has no real reason to use a generator they are a total waste of money - please bear in mind for those of us who do have a reason to own one - they are a very good investment!
