Hi,

I used my campervan for the first time over the Easter break and experienced a couple of problems.  I made a couple of errors!!  I think I know what I did wrong, but don't know how to fix the problems!!

Firstly instead of emptying the water tank from underneath the van (by means of un-doing the jubilee clip etc) I ran the sytem dry by taking the bung out of the waste tank and running the tap in the kitchen.  After I re-filled the tank I could no longer get water from any of the taps.  The pump stills appears to be working by the fact I can hear it running when I switch it on.

Secondly I foolishly left the fridge on 12V supply whilst I went out to get gas.  I was gone for longer than expected and when I returned to my van I found that the fridge had drained the battery.  I put the fridge back onto gas supply and initially the Zig charger unit (which was hooked up to the mains) started to re-charge the battery.  However as soon as I used the lights, which are 12V supply the battery charge indicater went down dramatically.  The lights worked but were very dim until finally after a few hours they gave up and went out.  Even on mains electric the Zig unit would only re-charge the batteries up to about 10-11 volt with the 12V supply turned off.
I switched off the mains and ran the engine to re-charge the batteries, which worked fine, but again as soon as I used 12V supply the battery starting dying.

Any help/suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks
Daniel

As far as the water system is concerned you might have an air lock which may be easy / difficult / absolutely impossible to clear depending on the design of your water system.

With the battery system there are two possibilities that spring to mind. One is that it is a dead battery, it is no more, it ceases to be, or two, it is a good battery but you have not let it charge for long enough.

What is the voltage when the Zig charger is on and also the voltage when you have the engine running? To charge a battery properly you are looking for a terminal voltage of between 13.7v to 14.4 volts. Because of the way an alternator works you will not get a full charge. It may be best to start the charge with the engine and finish charging the battery with the Zig.

Hi mattlad,

What I thought I would do with the water system is unhook the blue pipe from the back of the bathroom (this is because with the back doors open it is extremely easy access) and pour water down the pipe through a funnel.  I will have the electrics switched off and I shall open the cold tap in the kitchen and see if the water comes through.  If it comes through I'll switch the pump on and hope the system is alright!!

When the zig is charging the batteries through the mains the voltage only goes up to about 11 volts.  If I switch the lights out it goes down to 9V immediately.  With the engine running the battery moniter reads 13/14 volts.

We sometimes get an airlock and you can hear the pump working but no water comes through the taps.  On our MH we just unscrew the pump (it's fixed to a lid in  our watertank) and swish it around in the water - always worked so far.

Just make sure your boiler dump valve is shut as it was cold at the weekend,as for the battery give it a proper charge with a charger, as it seems you've drained it a bit too far.

Yeah the impression I get is that I drained it too far.  I will get it charged with a charger then hopefully it will hold its charge.

If your campervan has proper factory built interior & the electrics aint been modified it is not possible to run your fridge on 12volts except when the engine is actually running-when you stop the engine-the 12v supply to fridge is automatically cut---I sounds as if your leisure battery needs replacing--

Hi Billy,

My campervan was self-built so I guess that is why I could switch the fridge on 12v with the engine turned off.

What are the best leisure batteries to get?  And I mean value for money.  Is 110ah really that much better than 85ah?

When i went to buy a new leisure battery for my VW T25 campervan...i asked if i could upgrade from 85 ah to 110 ah...and was told i was better off staying with what i had ( 85ah )..cos it was married to the main battery power...for the charge when driving...don't know if that info was correct or just hot air...

hope you get it all sorded M8

I took both batteries out last night and I am taking them to a mates tonight to test and charge.  I noticed one battery was only 60ah, not sure about the other one though.

Another problem is that I have been told by the manufacturers of the ZIG CF9 that it is only designed to charge one battery up to 110ah!!  Can anyone confirm this?  I really think I need two batteries as I want to hook things up to it like a converter and a 12v fan heater!!

Thanks, Daniel

When you say 2 batteries do you mean they are both leisure batteries & there is a third one for the actual engine?--it would help if you state year & make of van & whether petrol or diesel--

Hi Billy,

Yes there are two 'leisure' batteries in the rear of the van and a seperate battery for the engine.  One of the so called leisure batteries just appears to be a normal 60ah engine battery though.

The van is a 1988 Transit 190 2.5D.
