Hello folks,

Going off to Ireland at the end of May, arriving Larne 02.00 on a Saturday morning and would like somewhere to get a bit of kip not too far from the port. Obviously we don't want to go on to a site at that time of night so if anyone can suggest a quiet spot for the night I'd be much obliged.

Also any suggestions for wild camping along the North coast/ Donegal please and what sites to avoid. In fact anything of interest (pubs etc...)

Thank You

I'd stay right in the portside for a few hours kip, then drive to a campsite. It can be risky to wild camp anywhere near the cities in N. Ireland.

give this site a call, you may be able to drive there at that time of the morning and park up at the entrance until they open.

Hi a couple who are friends of ours were attacked in Northern Ireland last year.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lincolnshire/6743497.stm not sure in relation where it is to the area you are going to, but they have wild camped all over Scotland and had a great time. They are recovering now and originally said they wouldn't ever have another MH. However with time they now have got over that fear, but he said he won't ever wild camp in that area again............they both still suffer from nightmares etc

I live in Scotland and have wildcamped many times here and in England.

We have toured both north and south in Ireland 7 times now and I would most seriously advise you not to wildcamp over there.

Ireland has a big problem with Traveller Families and this is reflected in the number of areas which have Height and Width Barriers. Try to wildcamp and you will be treated as a Traveller and not as a Tourist.

I personally know a number of famlies of the Travelling Community and so I understand their needs and wishes but I also understand the fears that local communities can have when they see an univited van setting up for the night on a vacant piece of ground.
In Ireland, more than anywhere else in the UK, people are liable to take action before they wait for an explanation.

Wild camping anywhere does not float my boat. I have read to many bad stories and it puts me off big time. The story from Briarose sums it up for me.

Were off to S Ireland in June. We have decided where we want to go and what we want to see so we have planned a route and booked sites in advance. I know for some people this can take the excitement out of the whole camping thing, but its they way we like to operate!

Hi there are some "aire" type parking spaces popping up here in N.Ireland. The best known one is in Broughshane, Co. Antrim near Ballymena. I pass this spot twice a week and there is always someone staying there all year round. It is a coin operated facility situated on the edge of the village.

I think there is one in Carrickfergus, beside the castle, and there is supposed to be one in Whitehead, both Co. Antrim.

Try www.wildcamping.co.uk and click on N.Ireland and I think his will get you what you want.

Hope this helps

Paul

Thanks for the advice folks. The tourist office in Carrickfergus says there is a parking and service facility on the harbour car park, so cheers Paul.

Hi all,

I wild camp quiet a lot in County Galway and County Clare. I find quiet a few places to wild camp in and around Kinvara & Ballyvaughan (Co Clare, the Burren) near the sea.

I cannot speak for all, but i never had any problems, quiet the opposite in fact as i found a lot of the people i met friendly, and only too willing to reccommend other places to wild camp. I hope you enjoy your break and have fun.

Regards

KC.
