We have been camping this weekend and because ground is wet our motorhome got stuck. Rather than wait for a farmer or help, a friend recommended we buy a winch. Our motorhome is a 4 berth swift sundance coachbuilt. Does anyone know or could recommend which type of winch would be suitable? If you have any other recomendations please let us know.
We are looking to buy something that will definately work and is strong enough to pull our van. It would be great if you could have a look and advise us of what sort of price we should be paying, as we are clueless on this subject.
All you need is 3 bread baskets (pick them up from mobile berger units who don't return them) or any bakery willing to give them to you. cut off the sides cut them in half and join the three strips together with ties. carry them in the under lockers of your motor home and they work a treat. no problems getting off any boggy site.
I have some like Madasa, but made of bottle crate bottoms joined with strong cable ties, great idea, when to get back on solid ground rince off inder the tap, fold over and pop in a bin liner bag, mine just fit under the passenger seat.
------------- Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.
Pete.

The lesson is : NEVER TRY .
I got my works van stuck last year on a grass verge, I spread a dust sheet under the front wheels and it drove straight out. Made a mess of the dust sheet though.
The winch needs to be fixed to a subframe on the front--if you google for a landrover forum you should find names of companies that fit winches--it aint gonna be cheap-several £100s I guess & its going to look unsightly---try contacting these people & go from there--
I use cheap rubber bathmats! They double as floor mats in the cab instead of proper floor mats. Keeps the carpet in the cab clean, but can't say I like the colour - they are pink! also hear of others getting cheap rubber mats from Wilkinsons. Best to park on them at the beginning if it looks like the ground is soft, rather than wait to sink in before thinking about them.
Be very careful about winching and using snatch blocks. If you are determined to go down this route then go along to a decent 4x4 Club and see how they do it. Believe me, it isn't easy and it is, potently, B. dangerous
We use the cheap rubber mesh door mats from Wilkos, as Jax 365 says. Park on them if on grass and it is likely to rain or the ground looks iffy. We then drive off by placing one infront of the other and moving slowly forward. Got stuck once and no intention of doing it again.

Sometimes a little rain must fall before you reach a rainbow.
The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you finish the work.
The Wilko rubber mats and the bread tray bases are the best and most affordable and they are what I use. The most pathetic thing that I have ever used as those dopey yellow mats from Fiamma. The best was aluminium perforated plate and its about £150 per piece before you ask
You could try www.pwsacc.co.uk they do various winches for m/home use, but I think the price, & extra batteries needed for any winch powerful enough for what you'd need, it would be easier with the bread tray job. I also carry a couple of hessian sacks, they work well.
Why don't you walk the ground you're gonna park on first, anything dodgy with your size 10s should avoid a tow out.
