Please can someone help me. We have had some work done on our motorhome, which we did not want, but it happened (probably due to mis-communication). A top box was fitted. Anyway as a result we now have a leaky roof. We have taken it back once for repair, but the leak has reappeared. The people responsible (MG Caravans in Hertford) are refusing to remove the box and make good to the roof.

To make matters worse they have been rude and discriminatory, at one point asking to speak to my husband rather than me.

Any advice on what we should do.

Thank you

The first thing i would do is just clarify how the top box came to be fitted to the motorhome , reitierate that the motorhome went to them for whatever reason and NOT the topbox .Politely tell them that in view of their bad atitude and the unwanted work along with the leak you are going to go straight to trading standards , make it clear that this is not a threat and that you are definatley going to trading standards , they will take up the case for you but it could take a few week,s for them to resolve the matter for you.

Personallly i would take a different stance and the workshop manager would have a broken nose but then i would still have a leak on my roof and a court case to worry about .The first suggestion is really the best option you have if they wont listen to reason, on the plus side trading stadards don,t cost and they are good at what they do and that is to be there to help you when you have a bona fide problem.

Hope this helps you let us know how you go with this one as it is very interesting

I’d be inclined to agree with delboydriver to a point, however, if you have an issue it’s always best to go face – to – face, as in the majority of cases, company’s do not want to spoil there reputation and a unhappy customer on there premises certainly does that!

I’d make a date to visit the company with your husband and ask to see manager.

The work carried out has to be guaranteed by the company as part of the sale of goods act. I.e. faulty goods should be replaced or repaired within a timely manner (usually a year) A leaky top box is one concern, but more importantly, the damage to your MH is even more critical. Make the manager aware that you are going to get a water ingress report completed on your MH and that they are liable for the bill, any work or costs you incur whilst trying to resolve this issue will be invoiced to the company until this matter is resolved.

Keep all receipts and make details of phone calls and costs, tell the manager that you will continue to retain all bills and receipts should you have to go through your solicitors. Remain calm and polite at all times – I recon you’ll have it sorted after the first meeting.

God luck

Hi Virginnia,

first of all put your case in writing to MG, giving them say 10-14 days to reply. If that fails, contact Trading Standards. Things are better in black and white, and it's the first thing Trading Standards will ask you to do.

Hope you get it sorted, Good Luck!

I would like to thank you all. Your advice and support are brilliant.

Must say part of me agrees with delboydriver and the broken nose, however, we have taken the more civilised course and written to MG. We will also be getting a water ingress report.

If the letter doesn't produce the desired results then CAB/Trading standards and the CCC legal section will be used.

Thank you and will keep you up to date on progress

Hi

Dont want to add to the misery, but I met a guy who had air con unit fitted and roof leaked. The only proper way to repair it, apparently, was to fit a new outer roof skin, which he said had cost close on £1000, my point being, dont be fobbed off, and dont accept a quick fix repair.

Good luck

Spot on - you must get it in writing. Keep duplicates of everything and send the letters by Recorded Delivery so that they have to be signed for - OK? Phone calls are of no use what so ever.
