Morning all

Does anyone know where I can find out the spec of the engine oil which my car needs? I have a 2004 VW Passat Estate tdi V6 and my dad is going to change the oil for me. VW's own oil costs a fortune so I am trying to find out the spec of the oil to see if I can get it cheaper elsewhere. have just phoned my local VW dealership who just said it needs Longlife Oil. Is this enough info to take to another oil retailer??

Castrol have a search engine for type or car/ type of oil to use..might come in handy. Let me know.

For the VW PD engines, use the genuine oil.   Camshaft wear can be a problem, better to us the original.

I think the Spec is VW 505.1.

The service schedules on these cars allow for standard 10k or longlife. Longlife is up to 2 years or when the computer thinks it's time.

Changing the service interval requires a dealer or someone with a laptop and VAGCOM.

A lot of people keep to a longlife schedule, but do a crafty oil change at about 8k. I've just switched my Audi 1.9tdi to a 10k interval.

Yay i thought i had lost my manual in my recent house move but i found it and have solved the oil query. managed to get it cheaper through another garage too. Thanks for your help guys! x
