We have a VW LT 25 camper with a Reimo Touraction awning that has an inner tent that sleeps two. We need the awning for sleeping our teenagers, but every time we are away we have had problems with the awning not being waterproof enough. After a long downpour (maybe when it's been raining for about 20 hours or more - and yes that ALWAYS happen wherever or whenever we go!) water starts seeping in, dripping and seeping and making everything very wet, making it impossible to sleep in the awning. Our awning is about 4 years old and after last year we re-waterproofed it completely, but still had the rained out problem again last week.
This is also our first awning so I don't know whether all awnings have this problem Can anyone advise whether we have just been unlucky or if this is the norm? If we have just been very unlucky, then please cany anyone recommend a really good waterproof awning that would stand 24 hours of rain (or more!).
What you need is the old fashioned canvas awning pegged out properly with all possible guy ropes in place. The modern nylon ones leak as you cannot get them really tight and always geta dip in the roof making a pool of water that will seep through, Also make sure you have nothing stored close to the sides of your awning as they will act as a conduit for water, bring everything as least 1ft in from the edges. Never skimp on your pegs, if there is a peg hole then peg it. Get some cheap tarps from a pound shop to cover all bedding and some of those cheap rush beach mats for floor. They absorb water and mud and at £1 can be chucked if wet. They are also very green as the straw material can go to compost. Hope this helps.
Bear in mind a nylon awning with 2 sleeping will get a lot of internal condensation which can drip off & be mistaken for a leak, the more it rains the worse the condensation gets, 4 yrs is a good lifespan for a nylon tunnel awning in regular use. erect it in your garden & spray it with a hose or just leave it up in the rain to try & locate any leaks & reproof it.
You could get a cheap plastic tarp to go right over the awning secured with guy ropes but it will make the condensation worse. I'm guessing that if you cannot actually locate a specific leak the problem is condensation, as the previous poster said an expensive canvas awning is much better.

Thanks for your help and ideas. Weird thing is that the inner tent doesn't really get condensation even when there is someone sleeping in it. In fact, last week, we had to stop anyone sleeping in the awning at all during the night, due to water seeping in during the day and making it impossible to put up the inner tent.
The van came with a canvas awning that is quite small and wouldn't sleep anyone - do you know of any canvas awnings that have sleeping compartments? I have seen the Khayam Family sleepover recommended on these forums (they are nylon though).
You can buy canvas awnings generally known as motorhome annexes, all the well known caravan awning manufacturers do'em but the cost several £100s, as I said earlier 4yrs is a good lifespan for a nylon tunnel awning in regular use so maybe just buy a new one, this time of year you should get some bargins £150 or so.

I have just bought an awning and took it on our last trip, it to leaked at the top seams. When I got home I put it up and sprayed all the seams with a waterproofer spray. I hope this works it did when I had a nylon tent. I will let you know what happens the next time we use it in the rain.
I hope that works for you! We sprayed our awning throroughly after a wet holiday in Scotland last year, but still had the leaking this year. Now, we have decided to try a paint on waterproofing, that Milletts have recommended. Hopefully it will be a thicker coating and we will be able to see exactly where it is going!

I have a khylam awning which I purchased just this year and on a recent trip it started leaking, the weather was quite severe and luckily I dont have anyone sleeping in the awning but I had to move some stuff back into the van ..so a khylam may not be the answer...
just a tip , always buy canvasawnings or tents . use brush on fabsil type waterproofer , put the awning up at home befofe you go away and hose it down heavily . canvas needs to absorb moisture to swell the cotton then it will be ok . never pack canvas away wet . dry in side when you get home as soon as poss. i use tents from the 1950,s and they work fine . follow the bos scout code and all will be good .
While your re-proofing your awning, pay special attention to the seams and use a proper seam sealer, before you re-treat the whole thing..
I re-treated a tent of ours several times, using Fabsil(I think that's what it's called?) and a hand garden sprayer, without much success, until someone pointed out that the seams needed doing with their own specific sealer..It's been fine ever since..
Also I'm not a fan of full ground sheets in awnings..They just tend to help puddles to form..As MartyM said, best to use several mats..
