Hi Carl & family,
My top tip is to start looking now. Go to a show if you can. Go round as many dealers as you can. You really need to go in and out of as many vans as possible to find what you think will suit you best. And then think again! We also read lots of MMM magazine's, Practical Motorhome etc, just to get a feel and of course, check out the websites.
We are new to the game also, just over a year. Our first was a 17yr old Transit campervan with a porta loo in the cupboard and no heating or hot water, but we loved it! There is only me, the OH and the dog, so space not a major issue. We went to the Northern Motorhome show at York last year in Sept. In April we were at the one in Peterborough and secured ourselves an autosleeper Nuevo es and it has been like 5*. it is not what we first intended. A fixed bed was a must for us. A 'lounge' area was a must for me. Space is very limited to us so that was the stumbling block as all the vans we liked, were too long. We found a 6 berth van with garage for all the stuff and all the stuff to go with it for £23k at York show, had we the space and the dosh we'd have bought it on the spot, it was the space that stopped us, but it would have suited someone with kids. The Nuevo ticks all our boxes because it is just under 6m. I am not expert but this ended up as our tick list (thereabouts anyway)
*fits in parking space (can you park it? can you store it if not?
*what do you want to do in it? relax? just eat and sleep?
*storage space for your essentials
*money available (you will end up spending more (likely) so don't just look for the gadgets included. Look for reliability, sturdynes & mileage.
Most importantly - don't buy the first one you see. Once you have bought, stop looking.
Hope that helps.
Time for shuteye.
