Hi All

I have been to Millport many times since childhood (now 40) and love the place, we have never been able to stay due to no campsite so didnt take caravan but now we have a MH we are thinking of going over for the weekend and just wondered if anyone had camped there. I have emailed the tourist office and they said its at my own risk which i totally understand but just wanted to know if any you guys had done it.

I know some will look at this post wondering where it is is a little island off the west coast of Scotland 10 minutes from Largs Ayrshire. Its a lovely place 10 miles round and loads of beaches and it hasn't changed since my gran took me there in the 70s.

Fantastic little island. I have often sailed across from Largs and then on to Ireland.

It's lovely to see the paddle steamer "Waverley" puff past on it's way back up the Clyde. Such a beautiful place.

I have seen tents pitched on the west side of Little Cumbrae, I guess so they can get a better view of Aran.

was over visiting relatives a couple of weeks ago and whilst there I was discussing the camping issue.... since the island was sold a few years ago the ban on camping has been forgotten(even the sign as you come off the ferry has been removed)... I don't believe you'll get any problem if you pull into one of the parking spaces round the other side of the island but I don't think there are any official spots though you could contact the static site up the hill ...cant remember the name and ask if they have any touring spaces......at one time there was a full time game keeper but I was told he's long gone.... my relatives said they had seen several people camping on various spots round the island and whilst I was over I spotted a couple of vans parked up, though whether they stayed over night I don't know....

Thanks for your replys and glad you agree that its a lovely island ans as far as im aware there is no offical camping places and on the offical websites it say ok to camp but at own risk and as long as you do no damage so i think we will give it a go if not we are thinking of the isle of bute another place my gran took me as a child and they have a campsite, but to be honest i do love Cumbrae just one of them childhood memories that stays with you and when you return its just as you remember it lol.

Hi!
We lived in Largs for several years and used to hop across and hire bikes to cycle round the island with the children when they were young! Fantastic little place, in a time warp, but it's nice to visit for a couple of days providing the weather is dry!
Before we got the Autoquest 180, we used to picnic on the west side of the island, but with regards to an overnight stay hmmmmmm, not sure if I would do that.   The chances are you might be ok, but I've heard some stories about people stopping "rough" for the night and had "undesirables" revving up car engines etc and I wouldn't like to find myself in that position. Personally I would stick to CL's or Club Sites.
Good luck!

Hi
Well its been a while since i posted this and i have been over to cumbrae with motorhome and parked up in the layby just past the cafe(where we had lunch) on the west side of island next to small toilet block. We had no problems what so ever after about 10pm never heard another car pass us we also saw a van parked on the front at millport. So if your sensible then i cant see a problem with it. I will go again no problem.

hi gerry , nice to see a fellow wildcamper , and glad to hear you had a successful outing , going by the posters in the caravan bit you would think that all wildcampers are a bunch of moronic , cheapskate dirty b's who tip their toilet waste in the road/sea and are a general nuisance on the same level as rioters ,, we think they are just jealous of our ability to achieve the kind of experience , that you just managed , well done and keep it up ,,

Thanks Steve i must admit we love wildcamping and seen some wonderful place we would never have seen otherwise like when we spent 2 weeks on the outer hebrides with 10 days wilding and one morning woke up to see a golden eagle sitting across from mh. We also enjoy campsite but sometome you just want to be in the middle of nowhere with noone near you.

"sometimes you just want to be in the middle of nowhere with no-one near you."

our problem is that we ARE in the middle of nowhere (well we have neighbours but hardly see them) and the view at our rear is across fields to the next village 3 miles away, the "main road" out front is 100 yds away and mainly farm traffic, 99% of sites are a lot noisier than here!

"our problem is that we ARE in the middle of nowhere"

i don't think most people would mind your problem , ukstevie ,, especially after reading some of the nightmare stories on here of holidays spent on some sites , and the knobheads that have spoiled those hols ,,

i also live in the middle of the backend of beyond , and yes , sometimes it's too quiet , but rather this , than living amongst a load of scumbags ,,

Gerry,

not sure if you are now aware but there is a caravan site in the town of Millport (Westbourne House I think) about 5 minutes walk up the hill from the town. Mainly for statics but they have a very small separate area for tourers/campervans only (no tents) and the couple that manage it are very decent so if you go again you could book in there!

aaaahh bliss ,, i'm posting in a thread in the camping and caravanning section , re naughty motorhomers , some of you have probably seen it , basically its a group of caravanners and campers who are strongly against anyone wildcamping , the fact it's legal and most people who do it are responsible ,law abiding people who just like to do something different to the site crowd , doesn't come into their way of thinking , its like a lynch mob , who's only way is their way , a few people have tried to explain and put the legalities forward , but to no avail ,, never mind ,, but coming in here , after being in that one , it feels so serene and peaceful ,,
