Well dont forget that it will be 40 years old! Ive known houses last less than that! You can expect serious rust and engineering bills on anything at that age, and ongoing maintenence issues.

We've had every type of VW made. The bay window one was lovely to sit in, but very underpowered. Go for the T3 with five speed gearbox and water-cooled 2ltr engine. Holdsworth or Autosleeprs had the best conversions.

Im still dreaming of a T5....... but will never be able to afford it at 40k+ for a van with a bed in it......

We have a bay and a split.  The OH uses the split as his daily drive and we have the bay on the road for 6 months of the year.

Properly maintained they will run forever.  Check out Kampamans website, the prices are out of date, but info still relevant  http://www.kampaman.co.uk/Frameset.htm

Also have a look at the Justkampers forum.

I prefer the bay as it's got a 2 litre engine and is a high top, very comfy. Even though it's LHD it's easy to drive, so don't let the fact it's not a right hand drive put you off - have a go first.  He (OH) loves the split and is going to Holland for a week in October.  We have covered thousands of miles in the buses and I couldn't imagine being without one now
