Hiya, not knowing what your spare wheel carrier looks like & working on the idea, that you may have to cut the carrier apart to gain access, i've found this item on EBAY

If it's like our previous Transit(..in that, the end of the wrench is like a large blade ended scewdriver!)you do have to make sure that the you really continue to keep inward pressure whilst you're turning it..otherwise it just slips out of the "notch" and turns free.
However if it is just "stuck",it may be worth spraying the winch assembly with WD40 and leaving to soak(..make sure it can't drain onto the spare though!) and then giving the wheel a slight pull down, whilst someone turns the winch...
The item that silverwood has shown on ebay does indeed seem to be the correct one for your vehicle, tonight i will be getting my spare out to change a wheel, i will measure how much of the bar is inserted into the hole and post my findings for you later.
thanks everyone, tried everything we could think of to get the wheel down it just wouldnt happen.in the end we had to cut it off, thanks again for your help.
