Eh? read the thread dolphin, you posted on here for advice, you have got it fully & completely from people who do know a little bit about 80s VW vans.
If you want somebody to tell you that your dad will get his van back on the road for £100, well I'm afraid that wont happen. Your original post suggests neither of you have any mechanical knowledge & my advice to you is based on that.
If your dad wants his van back on the road as quickly & reliably as possible then he will have to go the reconditioned WBX engine route, that is replacing the engine he has now with the same sort.
Any other route, ie secondhand engine or diesel replacement require the sort of existing & ongoing mechanical knowledge & ability you plainly do not have.
If splitwidow's hubby is prepared to take your van, remove the engine rebuild it & replace it then that sounds the way to go but remember you may need a new clutch/exhaust & loads of other parts & if he is able to give you a price for the job beforehand the he must have a good crystal ball.
Elite engines have a reasonable but not perfect reputation, their price of £900 fitted would not include extra parts required & I am betting the final bill will be somewhat higher than that.
If you click on the brick-yard link you will see Simon owns a garage in Huddesfield. he will fit a Vege recon & do a perfect job but the final bill could be approaching £2k.
The best recon engines are from VW themselves I fitted one to a van 10yrs ago & the present owner still has it running perfect after 100k miles, ring the freephone no in my previous post to check availabilty but I doubt you will get one now, this will be your most expensive option btw.
If you find somebody who claims they will get the van back on the road for £400, it will be a ripoff it will just break down again very shortly. You can pick up secondhand engines on ebay for £200 or so but fitting takes 2 working days at commercial rates so you could find at the end of all that the engine is not much good & you will have a bill of £100s.
The above advice is the definitive advice for your circumstances as you describe them, if your dad is unwilling to spend at least £1000 & probabley nearer £2000 to give the van a new lease of life I suggest he puts it on ebay as it is, he might get a few £100.
