Hi all

I am a season camper, but I seek your advice on a dilemma facing my the family.

My father has a Winnebago LeSharo, which is beyond repair, gearbox gone, engine uneconomical to run and too much hassle to get it through an MOT.

We have three options,

scrap (sell) - this will bring tears to our eyes

Mend - as above plus stress and cost

Site - know nothing about this! Is it possibile to store the winnie somewhere and use it as a permenant base?

advice would be most welcome

If its just nut n bolts i'd fix it, depends if it's in line engine or transverse, former being easier to transplant engine & box

As for siteing it, most sites have seasonal pitches, so its going to have to move at some point even if its just into on site storage

How long was the MOT fail sheet?

There are many campsites open all year round nowdays, would it not be worth making a deal with one of them re. siting the camper all year round? At the end of the day its just a camper sited on a pitch and as long as you pay your fees(monthly or yearly who would care?)  Thats the road i would take first before thinking of scrapping it anyway!!!!!

hi pending the year of the camper it is an easy fix.

remove the bonnet the bumper and the slam panel and you can withdraw the engine and the gearbox in one .

you will probably find a gearbox from a renault traffic will fit .

if it needs welding for the mot that is easy for a fabricator to do and as my old mate silverwood says if the rest is just nuts and bolts well fix it and enjoy it .

please let us all know which route you choose to take we are all interested.

My thoughts exactly Delboy, would be nice if it was RWD you could stick a right sod off lump in it. as for welding plenty off cheap migs about & it aint rocket science to learn, as for nut n bolts ya cant beat my old faithful angle grinder...Now where's me overalls

Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.

IF you have the inclination it is an easy project If me and silverwood lived closer I bet we could do it in about 10 days ish finished and cleaned ready to use.

GO ON GO FOR IT Teach yourself to weld thats easy get a cheap mig welder buy a little bit of steel and practice you will be surprised at what you can do .

The mechanics are simple it,s just logics being applied .

The rest is tlc and elbow grease.

Get onto it spoil yourself and enjoy your efforts its what I call self satisfaction.

As they say there is nothing like challenge to get the brain working.

I agree 110% even if you spend 3k doing it up, it's just got to be money well spent & value for money. Whats wrong with the gearbox? if it's just syncros & baulk rings it's an easy fix, if it's a guzzler convert it to LPG

Your vans only worth £200 tops as scrap, unless you fragment it yourself to flog on ebay

So look at it this way 3k spend, van runs faultless for 3 yrs = £83 mnth = £20pw + running costs & it'll still pull 3k when you sell it, thats a lot of cheap holidays

Shame they dont do pimp my ride UK
