We have been away in the south Lakes for the holiday, not in th MH but stayed in a hotel and thereby hangs a tale! Now we know why we have our MH, beats hotels hands down.

Back to my subject. We lost count of the number of campers we saw on the road. Far more than in the height of summer. There are some brave souls out there 'cos it was very cold but the sun  shone all the time so the days were lovely and the fells and mountains have never looked better, not a cloud in the sky. Interesting to see were some of you managed to hide yourselves away, you must have really sused out the area before hand, talk about wild camping and good on yer.

Next year we wont make the same mistake again.

We've just come back from Hawes, CC site, went on Xmas Eve, did the same last Xmas. It was fantastic, the weather certainly was a lot better than last year, not a drop of rain. Yes, it was very cold, but you wouldn't know it inside the 'van! Lovely and warm.
We love walking, so walked miles every day, including on Xmas Day, don't feel as bad indulging in all the food and drink after walking about 5 miles first
Wouldn't entertain staying in a hotel, not when we've got our lovely camper, and yes, we too saw a lot of them on the road today, when coming home.

We are looking to go away for the new yr, thinking the west coast scotland. Maybe Isle of Skye or fort william area. Do either of you know of any good sites with a friendly pub nearby. We have only just started looking and found a few are closed.

Thanks and all the best

Jim

Hi Jim

Sorry, but I don't know of any sites in the area you are looking for, but you can do a search on this website for sites, if you click on the box called 'CAMPSITE SEARCH' which is at the top of this page, 2nd from the left, top row. You can then input your criteria, ie open all year, etc, in the area you want.
Good luck with it.

we have just returned from grantown on spey . we stayed for 4 days over christmas and had a brilliant time .  plenty of walks  the weather was good but cold -10 one night. The site is first class only 5 mins walk fron grantown. Our only regret is we couldent stay for the new year as site has been fully booked for that since july. Will have to book early for next year!!!

It's a fact. We have been doing this for a long time but except for a brief week to Scotland with our two granddaughters some years ago we haven't been back. The weather was less than good but we had a nice time (teenage girls!!!)

Because of the cost of campsites in the UK we normally go abroard were we can get value for money. Rip Off Britain for us un-employed (read retired) not the hangers on.

As suggested, look at the list of campsites on this site.

We've just got back from Troutbeck, North Lakes, -9C to -3C but clear blue skies and fantastic walks and views around Ullswater. Van was lovely and warm with just the electric blower - didn't even need the gas fire

We've just got back from 2 nights on the Looe CC site and 2 on Carnon Downs near Truro. Both sites were really busy - a lot busier than we'd ever expected!

It was our first time camping in December and it won't be our last. It was fantastic......cold BUT dry - better than the weather we had in August!!!
