Hi Everyone...   :)

we have a Swift Conqurer caravan 655 Delux and are now considering moving to a Motorhome. We understand the shortfalls of haing only one vehicle etc.. but think moving to a motorhome to tour Europe over the next few years might be something we should seriously consider.

The question for these dark and wintry months is WHAT ONE!!
we want fix beds and all the refinement with as much space as possible for 3 adults and a dog .. but don't want to break the bank of Monte Carlo to get it..

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated from those who have done it, bought it, and have the
T shirt :)

I await your comments with serious expectation and delight.

Perhaps the suggestions will also help others too...
even those already with a motorehome :)

Warm regards
Pete

Hi

The first question probably to ask is what is your approx. budget which will determine if you are looking at a new vehicle / used dealer or used private

We looked at so many motorhomes and changed our mind many times , there are two of us plus two dogs . The things that were important to us-----

Comfortable driving position with a good view i am quite tall and found my vision restricted in the low profile vans , this made us go to A class

We wanted swivel seats that had no foot obstruction when rotated

A large garage which allowed for a fixed bed above

A cooker with grill and oven

Room in lounge area to accommodate us and dogs comfortably

We bought our vehicle a year ago thru E Bay and it ticked all our boxes although handing money to a stranger still wakes me up at night . But it has all worked fine for us.

This is a personal view and i realise that others have differing opinions

Building your own is poor advise unless you can all fit into a panel van. Just visit all the dealers that you can and have a good look around at vans within your budget. There are quite a few with a fixed bed and a large garage.

I think that if you have had a motorhome for a few years then doing a conversion is not a bad idea as I have often thought about it myself, but when changing over from tugging you ned to see whats out there first.

I did see a converted library van once, it did 50 mile/hour and still looked like a library van.

Lots of us use the caravan to provide the units, soft furnishings and fittings for the Motorhome. Let's face it, the prices on 2nd hand caravans is going thru the floor as is everything else. The caravan that I used for the Transit was given to me.

On the speed side of things I would have to agree especially with the Merc based vehicles. Still, you can always retro-fit a turbo on most of the later Mercs. And that's how you solve that problem - anyway, why do you want to rush? Staying at 50 to 55mph will save you a heck of lot of fuel. You can then spend the savings on Grog
