Hi Gerry, can you tell me a bit more about the France Passion.  I have sent away for the book and invitation but dont know much about it except that it sounds like a good idea.  One question, we have a porta potti that we only use if necessary during the night and that we either leave outsite behind a windbreak or in the drive away awning since it is a very small campervan.  Would we still be able to do this using France Passion.  Any other tips/knowledge etc about the scheme very eagerly awaited and any you could recommend.  thanks in advance

'To be frank I've never found any that show me much more than I can see in the car mirrors. When I towed with a Shogun I never bothered at all. I only use them because the Law says I must, they're not a lot of use.'

There are a lot of people who have this misconception.  The further out your mirror projects from the side of the car the better the view it gives behind the outfit and may make the difference between not seeing a car or motorcyclist poised to overtake.  The view may not seem dramatically better, but it is  and that is why it is the law.

Have you tried the suck-it-and-see mirrors.  It would be nice if manufacturers could make normal mirrors extendable ( at least as an option on vehicles commonly used as towcars )

Brian.

In answer to the original question. No.

If you want to tour campervan is the answer.

If you want to holiday on a campsite. Caravan

Why not try a campervan instead of going straight into something bigger? You could use it as your main vehicle which might mean you could go for something a little newer - I imagine a 'very old motorhome' might be a pain to keep on the road.

We have a VW California that is 8 years old and our main car, other than being careful with height limits (although being a pop-top it's not too bad) it's OK fitting into parking spaces just like a car.

We went from tents to the campervan, but the 2 main advantages I see are that you have it with you on days out, inc food and changes of clothes (great for kids or if the weather changes during the day) and if you go away for the weekend you can stop in places going and coming back where you couldn't park up a caravan.

Yes it's small, and even bigger motorhomes tend to be small in comparison to caravans, but for us that's part of the fun, plus in good weather we prefer to live outside in any case.

Why not try hiring something first - that's what we did and it helped us to work out that it was for us before we spent too much money!

Each to their own of course but not neccesarily the case, we've toured UK & abroad extensively and always used a caravan.

I can see the advantages of a motorhome, very much so but saying that is a bit black and white.

We hae

We have had this debate in our household on many occasions, OH grew up with a motorhome as her mum had one, I grew up with a caravan as my mum and dad had one, when we we're upgrading our trailer tent we looked at motorhomes, little campers and caravans and the cost of the motorhome put us off, We do a lot of walking from site anyway and we would use a driveaway awning for when we are out and about.
However when we came down to it, we had to have a large car anyway because of the dogs (now baby etc)  and the cost of a used motorhome we could buy a brand new caravan, If we had a motorhome we would have in effect 3 engines to service, 3 vehicles to tax etc as it would not really be practical for us drive it day to day.
I think one day we may venture into motor homing but it depends on your circumstance.
In an ideal world I would love a VW camper just to use for weekends away etc and the caravan for long holidays!

You could always get a VW camper to use as your car (loads of room for dog & baby) then use it to tow your trailer tent / caravan!!

At least then you don't have 3 vehicles to maintain.....
