Hi, I have noticed a ad in a magazine I was reading about these refillable gas bottles. I was wondering if any one is using them and what do you think of them. We are planning a trip to the south of france in July in the MH and I have heard its difficult to exchange gas bottles out there? (not sure if this is true). Just wondered if anyone can shed any light on this.
There is reams of discussions on this subject in other MH forums, Motorhome Facts and MMM's Out and About Live, for example.
I would suggest searches within these will instantly give you enough to digest.
There is one particular technical down side I would make you aware of. Most continental Autogas [for want of a more precise name] is a blend of Propane and Butane, unlike the UK's where it's near 100% propane. The ramification of this is at temperatures from zero C and below, only the propane boils off leaving liquid Butane in the bottle that at those temperatures is no use to you. So progressively at low temperatures the bottle "chokes" with Butane, you can't get any more gas in it and you can't use what you have.
Note this is only an issue at sustained low temperatures.
Cheers John
I go along with the above apart from one detail ie. the bottles are YOURS, that was what made my mind up, and instead of buying what was suggested to me,at the time we had a Rapido, i went for the 6 kilos ones , and glad i did, obviously i could not use them with my little Trident when we exchanged, but they fit nicely in the gas cupboard of what we have now ie Talisman, and its a lot cheaper to refill then exchanging bottles.
Hi.
I fitted the 11kg refillable Gaslow bottle two years ago, and haven’t needed to top it up, and spent 3 weeks in France last year and loads of long weekends away with Self Build Motor Caravanners Club. On that basis filling up abroad is not a problem, because you can top up in the UK with Propane before you go away. It will be many years before I reach the break-even point, but what it does give you is convenience of not worrying about filling up or exchanging bottles while you out of the UK.
Cheers Big Trev.

How long are you going for? if less than a month 2 full large Calor bottles should do you. If you are going for a long period its not expensive to set yourself up with French gas bottles. You cant change Calor bottles in France. The French gas bottle companies are Butagaz & Antargaz. You can change those at any petrol station or campsite in France.
------------- Sell my camper? I'd rather eat school semolina!
Hi and thanks for all the responses and advice. We are looking at 2 weeks in total, I think I will stick to the 2 x 6kg bottles for now. I will make sure I take full bottles with me.
I have never been across to france and if any one has any advice on routes and ferry crossings I will be glad to hear from you.
We went to France for a week at New year and used a full gas bottle in 24 hour's it was -6 during the day. This left us with only 1 gas bottle for the rest of the week. We couldn't buy a french gas bottle or refill our's at the time.
We have been looking at the gaslow system, it seems to be worthwhile if you travel a lot in the winter in very cold weather.
Not sure if it will pay if only traverling in extream cold for once a year.
If you are going in the summer don't worry we spent 3 weeks in France and Spain last year and didn't use one bottle.
WE only travel on the Eurotunnel it quick and easy, France is a great place to drive just remember some of them toll road's so consider the cost.
I have had a Gaslow system for 5 yrs and basically its the best thing i have done.
In France there are plenty of LPG garage outlets all you need is the French adaptor as there nozzles are different from ours.
The system is also paying for itself every time you fill up plus the convenience of not having to lug those heavy bottles in and out of the locker.
I run two 11kg bottles which equates to 44 ltrs. Europe in the summer i get at least a month out of one bottle.
They are pretty easy to fit yourself ifn you have any DIY skills i fitted an internal filler in the gas locker didnt want to drill holes in the camper. and you can take it out if you ever change campers.
We don't have refillable bottles but we do have a bulk tank which offers the same convenience. Being a large tank we have only filled it twice, the first being when we got the MH and it was completely empty, and then topped up before we went away last year. We've had a total of 4 weeks in France and several weekends since we topped up and still have half a tank left which should hopefully last us for most of this year.
If the bulk tank hadn't already been fitted we would have invested in the Gaslow refillable bottles - it would take a long time for it to pay for itself but the convenience is worthwhile.
We are on our way back from 2 months in Spain where it is very difficult to refill our gas low and topped up yesterday in France with a usage of 28 litres. We used only gas barbie , kettle boiling, oven/grill in this period as it is the heating and hot water that uses up the gas. I am trying to see if i can last out next year in Spain for 4 months in the winter without refill we have 2 x 11 k
I have a gaslow system which i fitted my self and love. It is not going to save you money unless you intend on keeping it untill hell freezes over.
I have not had the problems stated on post 2 and when skiing this year were subjected to temperatures below -20 whilst skiing.
I have one 11kg Gaslow bottle, the other being an emergency 6kg calorlite bottle. I have always been able to fill without issues, although I am aware of the problems in spain.
The major benefit of gaslow is it is sooooooooo convenient. not lifting bottles or having to worry about half full bottles being returned to ensure you have a full one to take away.
I would justifty teh cost as being the best thing I ever bought, (other than the van of course)
very convienient - aprt from in Spain, as they do not have LPG, they did, then found no one was using it so took most pumps out of stations.
The good thing with the refilable units is that when you go away for a weekend you do not know now much you use, so you are never sure if you will run out next time out etc, with the Gaslow just fill up, and pay for what is used and not what is left in the bottle as per an exchange
