I've used awnings on hired campers and been disappointed. They don't seem to fit. Is it possible to fit caravan style awning rail? I don't recall seeing this system on campers - is there some reason? It wouldn't be all that difficult to retrofit such a rail, if there were a suitable awning.
I'm looking at this in relation to a Romahome, which is a glass-fibre shell over the back of a pick-up. The connecting area is relatively small around the back door. It's not much bigger than the door of some tents.
In fact, after an experience at East Wittering (the awning wasn't safe when left in free-standing condition for the day) I'd be quite tempted to adapt a tent to this purpose (subject to shape, one wouldn't want anything very long). Does anyone have experience of this?
That's what I had in mind, on the very HyLo model I'm thinking of. Except ... it's much higher than I'd need (and perhaps more vulnerable when standing alone).
After placing this query I realised that the ubiquitous caravan awning (laced to the side/back of a van) may not be a good solution, because it's not easily demountable. Maybe I'm just looking too far ahead, to systems that need a lot of development that's not yet been done.
Still, with the right combination of bought-in awning rail, long zip, gazebo (? tall tent?) something should be possible.
