Hello all,

We're in the early stages of considering buying a motorhome (I'm convinced - I just need to persuade OH!)  and so the research begins.  I wonder if you could help please....is there a particular make/model that's 'well known' for its reliability?  What would be a good make to look at.

There are 3 of us (my son is 14 and has already says he doesn't want to sleep in a tent anymore!) and a small dog.  Would there be such a model as 3 berth or would we be better off going for 4 berth?  We don't want a brand new one to start with but I don't want anything too old either and we really don't want anything too big.

There's so much choice out there and we do plan to go to as many shows and displays as possible.....I think if we had a starting point it would help.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Jules

Hi Jules

We have and elddis autoquest 130 on an 06 like you there is 3 of us and a small but mad jr pup ours is a 5 berth and we are very happy with it i think if you went for a 3 berth you might be a bit crammed we also find that as we dont use the dinette for sleeping then if Sophie gets up early or i am sitting up late we dont need to disturb anyone so think of this aswell.

You will have loads to pick from have a look on ebay and go to dealers for a good look round even in ones you cant afford as it will give you ideas of what you are looking for we took about 4 months and loads of trips to see mh's.

Well good luck and let us know how you get on

Gerry

best advice is to get yourself to the biggest dealer you can and find a layout you think will work for you then it is much easier when trawling the bay to discount the ones which won't work for you.

another idea, admittedly can be an expensive one is to hire a MH and see how you get on, could either sell the idea or kill it off altogether with the OH.

once you've got a better idea of what you want get trawling the bay but buy with extreme caution, get a damp meter and check all the upp lockers, round the rear panel, around all or the windows, anywhere there is a join on the outside, check everything works, they can be costly to put right and treat the base vehicle as you would when buying any 2nd hand car, service history, accident damage, etc etc, remember that HPI check or similar (I use mycarcheck.com)

good luck!!

One important factor for me would be that it has enough factory fitted seatbelts for the maximum number of people you would carry.  This often means a central dinette is the most suitable option.

Sometimes a little rain must fall before you reach a rainbow.

The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you finish the work.

Go to a few shows and have a good look around. Find something you think suits you and then come and ask for opinions. You will be suprised at how many MHs there are, but more suprised by how many helpful motorhomers there are.

Thanks for the replies......I'm off to do some more research now you've given me a coule of things to think about.  I'll be back (as someone once said)!

Jules

p.s. we're looking to buy used (unfortunately funds won't stretch to new) would you recommend an age limit i.e. don't look at anything over 10 years old say?

Google juddergate and scuttlegate and be sure you know what to look for in the affected Fiats before you buy.

You've got motorhome dealers along the A4 at Theale & just off the A34 at Chievely so you'll soon find a selection to start narrowing down your choice. I've several mates with them & apart from one who needs a five berth, they all go for more berths than they need to help widen the market for them when they come to sell.

Look, look and look again.  Visit as many as you can take pics and go home and think some more.

Work out what you want from your MH and then see if it will fit in with the layout.  Some of the pitfalls pointed out to me by other Motorhomers were

if you want to sit up in bed and read some of the fitted beds have very low headroom

Some dont have ovens, some have ovens that are not beneath the hob, some have grills, some do not.

Some have a wetroom rather than a shower cubilce

Some putting up the second bed can take up a lot of space to make to full size making it difficult to get to the cooker space; my compromise as I will probably not need to use the second bed.

It really is down to work out what you want and what you like then putting it all together, there are some compromises that you can make and some that are a compromise too far!

Enjoy looking...

Then go out and look again ... then you sit in one and it says "Hello Mummy buy me ... I am yours" and I took the plunge and bought Matilda ... she suits my needs nearly perfectly and we have had hours of happiness together already.
