We are looking for a small camper/motor home (big as we can get up the drive) not an A class, a small coach built or a van based. The Merc van conversion fits the bill as per the size, so bigger than the average van but smaller than the average coach built. We are looking for secondhand £3k  - £12k.

Any and all advice welcome.

Within that price range you'd probably get a much better deal if you went for a caravan. I'm not being funny but you could get a really nice caravan for that money whereas the camper/motorhome would be quite old, too small or need a fair bit of work doing on it. I know some will disagree but I'm used to that.

I agree with Nimrodphil, I too was looking to change just like you are, but after searching for nearly 3 years doing all the shows and a hell of a lot of dealers/ebay etc etc i came to the conclusion that to get an outfit that I considered good enough for me there was no way short of a lottery win that I could ever in the forseeable future be able to afford one, so I had a severe re-think and decided the only way was to update my car and caravan, this I did and I am now very pleased I did, as the Car/Caravan combination is in my opinion the more versatile outfit to have, unless of course one could afford to have a big motorhome with the car on an A-frame behind.

Well thats my own opinion for what its worth Omega.

Omega, I was being quite serious, but if you really want a reasonable sized camper in fair condition I think you need to up your range by 3 or 4K. You can get cheaper ones if you are prepared to do a fair bit of work on them, I believe Auto Trader often have a few quite reasonably priced, but if you buy from something like that (or a private sale) I would recommend that you take someone with you who is fairly knowledgeable on campers and motorhomes. There are obviously quite a few differences between caras and campers and you could get taken for a ride, forgive the pun.

For me its the motorhome/campervan every time

Tents, uncomfortable, setting up and taking down a pain. esp if raining etc

Caravan still a fair bit of outside work to do when you arrive on site.

Motorhome park up and you are set, bliss

Omega, thats a pretty wide price range you have set, on a van conversion tho you would be looking at a fairly old vehicle by a major manufacturer even at the top end.

Have you considered buying a private conversion ? there are some cracking selfbuilds out there and you would get a much newer vehicle.

Best thing is to look at a smaple of target vehicles and see what you fancy

Here is my Iveco, selling soon £8,000 or nearest

Hi

We have an Autocruise Starfire motor home and we are very pleased with it.  A very honest vehicle, that easily fits on our driveway.  A very generous 2 berths, built-in shower, electronic loo, central heating, hot/cold water and a bed you could get lost in that takes 10 secs to get ready.

Check out Brownhills web site as this is where we got ours from

Regards

Richard

GeorgeTelford

Now thats more like it,

Would you call that a large "Camper Van"

How many does it sleep?

Are there any down sides to a self build? What about insurance cover!

Whats the engine and how many MPG

This looks someting like the size of the Merc I considered may be ok.So may be interested. What do the other campervaner's think is it a good buy?

Hi Omega,

Insurance cover not really a problem at all the Iveco is Insured through Shield direct who have a lot of experience with selfbuilt vans.

Engine 2.5 Turbo diesel

MPG takes 50 to fill and always does 310 Miles per tank, virtually regardless of motorway Journies or local pootling, I recently went to Belgium in it towing a 12ft caravan on that journy it did 298 per tank, around 22-23 MPG constant average

We sleep 2 adults in double, one adult space across from kitchen one sleeps in the overcab shelf ! one across front seats.

Kids are growing upo fast thats why I am building a bus conversion. the Iveco as all the right gear, shower, oven hob grill, small occasional table full dining table, TV, Fridge freezer 3way, carver fanmaster Heater (gas/240v heatsources), 2 way hot water heater Gas/240v and plenty of storage space. The write off caravanb used was actually a 2001 caravan.

We have slept more using a inner awning tent.

George
