I am wanting to go away with 2 friends who each have caravans. The site we want to go to doesn't accept tents so I can't take my usual outfit.
I have a Toyoate Hi Ace Super Custom which is a fab vehicle and the rear 2 rows of seats turn and covert into a large bed. There are curtains all round and I have small drive away awning (8' x 6') which attatches to the vehicle.
Would it be possible for me to use the car as our sleeping accommodation (me plus 2 boys aged 8 and 3) with the awning for living space or am I mad to even contemplate doing this?
We're only going for a couple of nights so what do you think? Finding another site which accepts tents and caravans isn't an option for this particualr trip.
Will the fact that it isn't a properly converted camper cause problems? I have a proper 3 plug EHU which we use in our tent which I would take to use in the awning to power a light and fridge and I have my camping stove and kitchen stand for cooking.
Any comments, advice or if anyone has done something similar I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!!
Sounds fine to me, I don't know what the campsite restrictions are, but i have seen smaller units than what you propose, give them a ring and tell them what you propose they can only say no.
I think that as your vehicle has curtains and looks like a small motorhome, the site will just assume that is what it is. I can't see any problem with doing as you suggest.
I have actually heard of folk being asked to pay for 2 pitches when they turn up at a site with a similar MPV and a tent, as the site say it is a motorhome, and have taken a lot of convincing that it isn't!

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.
Helen, we have a Toyota Granvia, before that a Toyota Townace, and we've done exactly the same as your thinking of - driveaway awning on the side as our living area and sleep in the van. We just call it a campervan and have never had any problems anywhere.

In the 60's my old Dad put swish curtain rail (not posh, just the name!) right around the Austin Cambridge Estate we had . Him and Mum slept in the back with me across the front seats.
We had many a night on Scarborough pier on a Saturday (even though, even in those days there was a sign stating 'No overnight camping')
Go on, have a go. They can only say no but by then you will have been there the night.

Hang on a minute, we have a full blown 6 berth motorhome with Movelite driveaway awning. We have 2 boys so make the dinette into a large single bed for eldest, yongest sleeps on single settee and me & hubby in bed over cab, we then use the awning as living area with table and chairs, so that the beds are permantly up and the van is for sleeping and awning for during the day, (although the boys will lay on their beds playing their DS's LOL)
How is this any different to what you have just described. Just because yours may be smaller in size it is still a motorhome.
