Have just come back from my first short stay in my Mum's motor home and I've got a couple of questions I'm hoping someone can help me with.

We're off to France in 6 weeks time as OH is riding in a classic bike event. the problem we have is that once the MH is on site (by site I mean parked in a field with no hook up of CDP etc) I don't think we'll be able to move it around to get fresh water (we'll be there for 3 days) So, how do we top up? Can we get an external tank set up like I've seen on caravans? I don't know how the pump would work though. Or is it a case of a funnel and water carrier!!!??? In addition what about grey waste?

As for the toilet.......i'm just hoping it'll last the 3 days and we can find a place to empty it on the way home!!! Toilet stops will be rationed and no friends will be popping in to use it that's for sure!!!

Any other advice for an off grid stay would be appreciated

we use a watering can for topping up the fresh water when i cant be bothered to move the van and as for the waste we sometimes use a 10litre waste carrier which is not to heavy to carry or you could even use your washing up bowl(just means more trips)

We use a 5gal water container carried on the toilet trolly from tap to van and then a 12v submersible water pump to tranfer it up about 4.5ft to the filler point. Saves faffing about back and forth to the tap particulary if its busy. The grey waste water can be colleted in a bucket and scattered in the hedges/bushes. The toilet waste would be a problem but you will be in France and I would have thought some form of facilitys would have been made available for the event, also find out off the locals where the nearest aire is for disposal. Enjoy the trip.

The external pump & container like an aquaroll require a hole to be cut thru your wall to install the quick release external pipe & submersible pump. I'm sure you won't want to do this to your MH so you will need to use the method as stated above.

For grey waste if you are stopping in a rough field just leave the drain tap open nobody will notice & as fer your bog, if things get desperate take yer waste tank & yer folding shovel into the woods nearby, dig a hole & bury the contents. I might get sl*gged for the last 2 suggestions but needs must an' all that.

Thanks for those comments. I must admit I was wondering about the grey waste etiquette. Last week we stayed in a basic site and couldn't find anywhere to empty grey waste so we pulled into a layby and dumped it. Felt really guilty and didn't think it was very environmentally friendly. What are the other alternatives? There was a CPD but no open drains on the site to pull up to. I was looking at a water hog, are these any good or a waste of money and space?

Personly I  think purchasing a waterhog is a waste of money, tuggers buy them because they have no built in waste holding tanks like motorhomers. We use a 5gal waste water container stored under the van in its own purpose made cradle and use it to collect the waste from the main tank when we do not want to move the van, it is transported on the toilet trolly to a suitable dumping area ie ditch/hedge/tree if the site offers no drainage, which many dont.

I do not have any quarms of getting rid of waste water, which basicly is just soapy water with perhaps minute particules of food in it, but saying that it would not be sensible to dump it in full view of the public as they may well think it is from the toilet. I do not consider it right to let it drain slowly out on a camp pitch for someone else to perhaps pitch a tent on the sodden ground.

A popular trick with grey water  is to ( slowly ) discharge out from a just open dump tap when driving along, some may say that makes the road surface greasy and dangerous but I do not agree with that idea.

Toilet tank should last 3 days ok (which is about as long as you would want to leave it anyway) just make sure you put in a full measure of chemical with about 3 litres of water before use, and dont use too much water to flush each time its used.
