Kampa Travel Pod:
My van has a pop top and so it's not possible to " try just attaching a couple of throw-over straps and pegging it down?" as the pop top gets in the way.
On a similar van that I used to have, I had a "proper" driveaway awning and I never did solve the problem of the figure of 8 thingy falling out of the gutter all the time.
My current van has a length of awning channel secured to the side above the gutter which the awning could be fitted to - but it does entail taking the awning down if I want to drive off site.
I don't think there's an easy solution.
