Hello all.  Having been caravanners in our past, then campers, we are now in the process of looking for our first motorhome.  Searched the area and getting too spoilt for choice.  Any advice from motorhome owners would be appreciated with regards to good and bad points of any models.  We are hoping eventually to take ourselves off to France where we have spent the last nine years camping.

Thanks

Bev and Steve

I think youve got to decide roughly on size & body style first-then start thinkin about makes--also are you using it all year round? types suitable for cold winter use will have double floors to prevent the pipes freezing wereas the cheaper ones wont---

Thanks for replying.  Hopefully yes we want to use it all year round both here and Europe.  We have found a couple we like the McLouis 690G and a CI motorhome the problem is the size.  The McLouis has a larger garage which is appealing as we have a dog!  The drive is the problem and where to put it.

Hi Bev & Steve, Welcome to UKCS

There are loads of motorhomes out there to choose from.

There are a lot of things to consider like do you want a (campervan or a motorhome) if you want a motorhome do you want a low profile, coach-built or A-class  how many berths, the layout of said vehicle such as sleeping arangement, kitchen area, lounge area, storage area, all these will come into consideration when choosing the vehicle.

And then the most important thing of all is the PRICE.

If I where you I would take a little time and go to some of the dealers and have a good look around at different vehicles, dont go jumping in with both feet with the salespersons spiel.

We bought an old trasit motorhome first to see if we liked the lifestyle, and it also helped us in what to look for in our choice of vehicle when we decided to go the whole hog and upgrade to the motorhome we now have.

Best of luck with your hunt, just remember it's your money and your choice.

Hi

We had an old VW to start with to see if we liked the life.It gave us a good idea what we wanted then we went to YorkShow and come away more confused then ever, we nearly bought a coach built there but decided to sleep on it and were glad we did as we changed our minds. A main factor for us was that as I do'nt walk well it needed to be small enough to take off site but big enough for comfort. we ended up having a conversion done to our own design on a citron long wheel base. Make sure you see how easy beds are to make up and try them for length.

Go to a big dealer or motorhome show and look at as many different models as possible.  Once you've a good idea of which model you want, then look around for the best deal, where to buy etc.   As stated above don't rush and don't let other people over influence you.  You're the ones who will be living in the motorhome.

Thanks to you all for the advice.  We have visited our local dealer four times in two days but he only stocks CI vans so now we have to venture further afield which is time consuming.  Visiting a motorhome show I think it has to be.  What we would like to know if there is any info out there is reports on best buys, a best buy table or something.  Does anybody have any comments about either the CI or McLouis.  So far these are the two that we have taken a liking to.

Thanks and any advice tips etc is appreciated.

Try the Motorhome magazines there are a few of them out there like MMM, pratical motorhome, motor-caravan, motorhome monthly, they all give advice on best buys and road tests.

But at the end of the day it's a personal thing, what suits you may not suit everyone because we are all different and have different needs.

There are plenty of motorhome dealers with their own websites.  This way you can look at all the types make a list then track down where you could see them.

We find Marquis good as all their vans are open and the one we have visited they don't bother you too much.

The York show is very soon.  Not only can you see loads of dealers displays but you can walk around the camping area see what other people use and I am sure if you speak to people they will be happy to discuss their van with you. LAst year there were over 3500 from the tiny to the huge American ones it is fascinating to look at them all.

We have an Autosleeper Duetto based on a Ford Transit we love it but can see you are after something a bit bigger.  Some of the smaller dealers are good.

If we can help you any more you know where to find us.

Jana
