Wanting to change from a tent to a mh. Thought of a caravan, but OH won't even consider towing!

I would like the smallest possible van that can take 2 adults and 4 medium/large very lively dogs. Would be for up to a fortnight at a time holiday in Scotland. I don't want to be on large campsites all the time so loo/shower are essential.

I don't know the pros and cons of each layout.

Any pointers would be useful...Oh and I will be looking at the "well-used" end of the market.

Without seeming rude, just go and look at lots at dealers sites. There are far to many variations to list.

As others have said, visit as many dealers as possible before deciding.

We have just gone from a caravan to a motorhome and have changed our minds a couple of times. We now think we have the right vehicle for us.

We now have the trailer and get the towbar fitted this Tuesday. We shall then be ready to take the Caterham 7 with us . Vosges mountains here we come next summer .

Hi Julie

Just seen your post.  I agree, it can be a mine field out there, and look very carefully.

This has been our first year 'vanning' - it took me 5 months to find something that suited us!!  and like you, were looking at the bottom end of the market - we weren't sure whether the concept would be for us.  We had just aquired a dog, and wanted a solution to taking her on holiday with us.

A couple of things to think about.  How do your dogs travel i.e. do they settle down well on a journey, or will they need a 'cage' - mainly to keep them and you safe - they could become 'doggy missiles' in the case of an accident.

The next thing to ask yourself.  Do you want to leave the site to sight see?  If so, you dont want to go too big - van size - re parking.  We over come this problem by getting a 'drive away awning.  You can dump all your gear/ doggy stuff and leave it on site whilst away.  I really did not enjoy vanning until we got a drive away awning.  So much more space, and it saves having to 'batten' down the hatches, before going off site for a few hours.

We ended up with a Talbot Express panel van, as they are called.  It is classed as 4 berth, but the 2 are above the drivers area and not really suitable for sleeping - well thats my opinion, we use the space for storage.

I hope this has been some help to you, and good luck in your quest.

Regards Val

Get yourself on to eBay, not to buy but to research all the various makes, models and layouts available and get an idea of price. Once you've narrowed down your criteria visit dealers in your area or look in your local paper for vans that may be similar to what you are looking for. Remember a layout that looks good in a photo might not be once you're inside it.  Its quite a long process to get a suitable van at the right price, it took us a year of research and trawling dealers and private sellers but we got the van that was right for us in the end. Happy hunting 17
