I am thinking of getting a Fiamma Ultra box which would be mounted on the rear bike rack of my VW T4 campervan. I am a little concerned that the extra weight will make opening the tailgate a little tricky due to the extra weight, or are the benefits of extra storage too good to mss?

Is the soft bag version a silly option as it cold easily be cut open with a knife?

I have the biggest ultra box you can get,but is on a coach built camper,so no probs with a rear door,but its very good for putting stuff in instead of have it in the van while travelling

I think that there is a soft bag version but I would've thought that any additional weight on a tailgate would overpower the struts,(..as they're only designed to just lift the tailgate).

I wouldn't have thought it wouldn't be a problem though..with the advantages out weighing the downsides.....maybe just have a seperate prop,if need be?..or  look into possibly fitting more powerful struts?

had one on a bongo a while back... bit of a struggle opening the rear door while full ..not to bad when empty but door wont stay up so still problomatic.... gives quite a large over hang and blocks rear view....still usefull though ...easier than pulling a trailer though doesn't carry as much....not cheap either when you add price of fiamma rack but the final straw for me was inabillity to carry bikes so I bought a small trailer and kept the rack...
