i am thinking of getting a smart forfour car and was thinking about having it fitted with an A-frame so we could tour around and leave the van on site, just wondered if any one has experience of using the Aframes.

Have not used one, but if you intend to use it abroad then you may have legal problems. It is now illegal to use them in Spain, and you will be stopped and fined. In France I believe the same applies but perhaps with less vigour .

In this country it appears to be allowed at the moment, which is strange really with all our nanny state rules.

This topic has been much discussed here in the past. I suggest you do a search and read up on the comments from these.

I think you will find that those who have A-framed in the past, swear by it. Those who have never a-framed are super critical.

Hi ,I have towed with an A frame for  4 years, tugging a Suzuki Alto behind my Autotrail Chieftan, around UK and France, Spain,Portugal, without any problem, not been stopped by any authorities, found Spanish politzei curious as to how it works, nothing further,

You need to appraise any situations carefully before commiting yourself,ie,entering toll booths, turning down side streets, entering small campsites, etc, because of reversing problems,I always nip out and disconnect car brake cable, for a short reverse,if I do drop a gooly.   Pamal

i have used an a frame for recovery and if it is not being used for recovery must have a braking system connected to towed car like a normal braked trailer only thing that you have to watch is your weight ratio, if you get a very light towed car (under 750kg)you do not need brakes on it

Hi, we used an A Frame for 18 months here and France, never had any problems and without a doubt the easiest way to take a car, but now we have changed the car for a new Smart we put it on a trailer.( smile ) The only Legal way to do it, just had two months in Spain without looking over my shoulder worrying about being stopped with the A Frame. But if your only going to use it here in the UK, its ok at the moment, you pays your money and take your chances. Bob.

I used A-frame for a while and found ok as long as you dont want to go in reverse. Also tends to scuff front tyres on towed vehicle, otherwise ok. Prefer a trailer, had no probs with that.
