I partialy de-railed another thread with this..so I thought I should ask afresh..

Can I just ask the satnav owners out there...are there any buying tips/experience that they'd like to pass on?

Models/types to avoid...?

I'm aware that there are models out there with MH/caravan in mind..

...but I suppose I'm really after their general ease of use as much an anything....and how "intuitive" to use the various makes are?(..in the way that, you can find your way around some mobile phones without reading the handbook...whereas with others, you would't have a cat in hells chance!)

Any pointers?

Chris

You can always Google for reviews of the different models or go somewhere like Amazon where there are also reviews. Not sure they will answer your question you are asking from th motor caravan point of view. I have used the two most popular makes TomTom and Garmin both are reasonably easy to use. Garmin have a feature which allows you to programme a route for a large vehicle which might be useful although as I found out its not foolproof! With any sat nav you do really need to check the route against a map and if you find parts of the route you on't like then you can go back to the sat nav and change.

Have both a Garmin Nuvi 860 and a TomTom XL

My best advice would be to go to Halfords and spend time having them demonstrated to you. If you can work one, and they are really easy, you can work them all

The most important thing to look out for is the maximum volume of each unit. My Garmin is as good as useless in the motorhome! although it does support FM radio tuning which means the sound can come out of the vehicles speakers but you cant then listen to a CD or the radio?

The TomTom XL has a great volume level, nice sized screen and clearly shows you which lane to take in plenty of time. Also a reasonable price.

I use a Tom Tom 910 in Europe and the Uk it is very simple has loads of features which are useful, but they do have there moments but usually if you input rubbish it will give out rubbish.

I have used other units but found Tom Tom the best.

The unit has a hard disc which can be loaded with music 14 gig has blue tooth for the phone.

The newer models are voice controlled.

Very load ,i us it on my motorcycle so it has to be.

Thanks for the feedback..

I think the Tom Toms are at the top of our list so far (..a mate and my brother have one)..

I just didn't want to be swayed into buying something because it was on offer, saving 20quid!..only to then spend the rest of the time shouting at the thing,if(when)it turned out to be a useless, irritating piece of tat!

I have only recently purchased a refurbished Tom Tom Go 530 from Tomtom website for £129 and have so far found it very easy to use. I did worry that I would have to plough my way through a novel before getting everything up and running but thankfully not the case. I am extremely pleased with my purchase.

Happy navigating

I have a tom tom 710 and a Navman. I recently upgraded my Nokia phone to the latest version of Nokia Maps and now I only use that, it is free, the maps are always up to date (free) and it is better than either of the others
