You could ask at virtually any pub whether you can stay over in the carpark if you eat or just drink there.

You may feel safer than being stuck somewhere deserted.

Hi, France cheap you have got to be joking, perhaps there are a lot of Aires some of which charge and all of them expect or hope you go into the local shops/bars etc and spend some money, and have you purchased a meal of a drink out in France recently, CHEAP IT IS NOT, by the time you add those costs to the Aire price the UK is cheaper by far.

I actually love France but don't go around kidding people that the Aires make France better place as the UK is far cheaper even taking the cost of campsites/CL's etc into consideration,

Sorry to disagree but France is still cheap in terms of places to stay - the majority of aires are free, sometimes you may pay a couple of euros for a tank of water but often not. Sometimes even the electricity supply is free. So, with overnight costs as low as that a couple of, admittedly overpriced, beers isn't going to break the bank.

Hi,

It really depends on your style of holiday, but ours is to enjoy the views etc but to also get away from the normal every day chors, like cooking etc so we do expect to eat out at least once a day not always in the evening we may just have a light lunch etc. and I can tell you from just recently spending over a month touring France is definitely EXPENSIVE take away the perhaps 10/12 per night saving, which again is rather generous as most Aires at best only compare with the CL/CS we have over here which can be obtained in the UK for less than 10 per night,

I went out last night with my wife to the Wetherspoons Curry night £5.69 each we both had 2 extra drinks wine/beer change out of £17, France shared a Pizza with a plate of chips 2 small beers €28 and the place was no better than a Wetherspoons more like a working mans cafe I could have paid for the CL/CS from the savings and that's a similar price all over, it can be a lot lot more.

You may not be a lover of Wetherspoons and may want to decry them as a comparison and I may support your argument but there are a lot of places in the UK offering similar deals in perhaps better surroundings, what is offered in France at the sort of prices I am quoting from are no more than cafes, if you want to go upmarket in France into some of the finer Restaurants, then double or even treble the €28 I quoted.

I love France and we will go back, but don't lets bury our heads in the sand its bloody expensive and has gotten worse in the last year 18 months,

If you want to cook all your own food and drink your own beer/wine and stay on free Aires then even taking the reduced fuel costs and ferry fares you may well come out cheaper than the UK.

But if you want to go out for the odd meals and have the odd drink or coffee in a bar and perhaps meet the locals for a chat etc. take plenty of money with you.

If you do use Aires then you should be spending money in the local bars/shops/restaurants as that is the only reason the Aire has been provided is to try and get people who use them to support the local economy, so please don't use them and try to save money as they won't be there in the future for the rest of us.

France is great but so is the UK don't knock it,

we were running late one day to our destination, and was getting too tired to drive on any further, had to pull into a 24hr tescos for some shopping anyway, whilst inside the shop , asked the security guy if it was ok to stay over in the carpark , he said he'd seen our unit outside and thanked us for actually asking to stay ,and not taking  liberties by just setting up, directed us to a quiet part of the site and still within cctv coverage, which i thought was an excellent extra .woke  up nicely refreshed and had the added bonus of a newspaper and cafe on my doorstep, excellent!! i find it never hurts to ask or offer to pay, only rarely do you get some miserable scrote not willing to come to some arrangement.
