I've just purchased a rather large Fiamma roofbox for my VW Compass Navigator 360RL but the problem is I have no roofbars/roofrails and would rather not fit any, however I am worried about screwing directly into the roof. Opinions please on if it's ok to do this if I use a sealant.
be very careful if you are thinking of drilling through roof .it can be done you will have to plan were it is going to go on roof and were the bolts and plates will be .sikaflex is the sealant to use .plenty of it .try and find a timber beam to drill through .there should be some near roof vents .when i fitted a box to my compass i fitted roof bars then box
------------- do it to day it might be too late tomorow
I have a Fiamma 3 on the roof of my van, i must admit it concerns me that it is screwed into the roof rather than bolted, it also has a layer of sikoflex around it, but i cant help having visions of it flying off in high winds, to be fair it does seem to be really tightly fixed, is it normal to fix to a roof like this. I guess that to bolt it on, i would need to remove the interior panels and the insulation which may not be feasible. its a massive box and very useful for storage, keep my driveaway awning in it. but just have to remember not to forget my telescopic ladder on each trip.
Even though I rate Sikaflex highly, personally I'd still be looking at running a few bolts, tubed down through the roof(...possibly exiting into overhead lockers or wardrobe?)..
You could always smarten them up on the inside by some form of plastic cover over them, similar to the covers used by Fiamma/Omnistor to cover their fixings..
..I wouldn't under estimate the forces applied by the wind, combined with the jolts and jarring from the vehicle's motion...
(..someone posted on here quite a while back, that their top box had come off,so it can happen..)
If the recent poster wishes to fix the box direct to roof as described then he needs to bolt it down & use Sikaflex or any similar PU sealant to seal around holes to ensure waterproofing.

My post was in answer to the poster beechy who posted on 10/12/2016. I advised him to use Sikaflex 512 & assumed he had bumped the thread as he was also fixing a roofbox to his motorhome.
