Hi all
I'd really like another vw t25. But as their price is soo high at the mo i've decided to look at alternatives that are similar layout, reliable and easy to maintain. Would prefer pop tops/elevating roof rather than coachbuilts, with solid beds rather than hammocks.

Age/cost wise I'd be looking at an '80s vintage.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Kim

What about going for something 1990s vintage and investing in a Ford Freda (Mazda Bongo). We are emigrating so ours is for sale in the for sale section of the website. There is plenty of info available on them - they are fab.

There are old Jap based campers about, 1980s vintage, UK supplied from new, not imports like the later Bongos which might be out of your price range. Danbury did a Toyota conversion which is similar to T25. They tend to go cheap. I imagine most of the old Transit based campers have rotted away by now but if you do find one there is a big owners' club & spares available. Look out for 80s Talbot based campers as well.

I don't know anything about Talbots- are they any good/easy to maintain/reliable?
Any prone problem areas to look for?

Talbots are just the Citroen/Fiat type vans marketed as Talbot in this country in the 80s. Plenty on ebay

No, we haven't all rotted away yet.

There was an Autosleeper Frisky like mine on e-bay last week.

I wouldn't get a Talbot - horrible things to drive unless you are quite tall.

There's a coupe of Renault based Autosleepers similar to my Frisky on e-bay now:

This one.

This one.

if the price of a T25 is too rich than you can sure rule out T4s as they are crazy prices.... as mentioned early toyotas or bedford mite be a good idea they tend to come up on ebay quite often

So many different layouts I think I've just gotta go with one that I know works for us with 2 toddlers!

The worst thing that I found with my Talbot was that it did not have power steering. It also had probably the worst turning circle of any van that I have owned.

The 2.5L engine is bomb proof and would take you to the Moon and back

Watch out for rot around the front windscreen: Talbots are very prone to that and it is a very expensive repair

Best thing we ever bought was our bongo - runs like a dream, fair on fuel, done loads of long trips including one over 4k last year to the south of France, again scheduled for this year.  A 98 plate and sailed through its second MOT with us.
