Help please.
Which is the best van for us? Autosleeper Exec.Peugeot 2.5 TDI or the Harmony Peugeot 2.0 petrol, both 1999.
There is only the two of us and we want to tour rather than stay on site for longer periods. We will be travelling in the UK and Europe for 4 weeks at a time.
What are the bad points?

The bad point of the petrol one is that its petrol. If you want to tour in Europe you want a diesel. Cost of diesel in most of Europe at moment is under £1/litre due to lower tax regime while petrol in Europe is similar price to UK, plus of course a diesel will have better economy.

I travel in an A/S Harmony.

It's a great van for 2, but we are both small.

The engine does struggle a bit on hills, and you need to utilise the 2 front seats for the beds, would you get fed up of doing this? and the drivers side bed means your feet are under the steering wheel. check the beds for comfort.

Cooking is basic with 2 rings and a grill, would you miss an oven?

Very easy to park, just fits into std size space

Haven't any experience of the exec, but would assume it's got an oven.

Bathroom and shower are probably similar in both, but the shower is very small in them, really try them out for size , we don't tend to use the shower as it takes quite a bit to dry it out and we tend to store our holdalls of clothes in there when travelling and if on a site it's easier to use their facilities.

Basically crawl over them both and try to imagine yourself  'living ' in them, test drive them both as you will probably spend a lot of time driving.

The exec will give you more room I would think, but will be a bit bigger, and wider than the harmony.

We really like having the large opening side door in the harmony, especially when its warmer, but I think a van conversion will be a bit more drafty if your planning to use it in the winter.

Our longest trips have been for 3 weeks, and have been as far as the outer hebrides, orkney, france and italy, as well as lots of shorter and weekend trips, throughout the year.

Hope that helps

Jules

Our last van was a 2.5td Executive and was a good van from day one for two us, under 6mtrs for frerries and not that wide compared with vans being made today. We did trips into France and Germany lasting upto about 6 weeks with maybe a week either side in the uk.
The van did everything we asked of it until we swopped it at 8 years old. There is another Exec in the family which has around 170k miles on the clock (1996) and it still looks like theday it left Willersey.
You will find the monocoque bodied vans depreciate less as there are no seams in the body shell to leak.
IMO there is no decision - the Executive is the choice.
Out of interest the Talisman shares the same shell but has a different interior layout so my comments apply to that model as well

We have a 1995 executive 2.5 d and have to agree with dodger. She is a good old bus, easy to drive, and for two, offers plenty of space with more than one bed configuration, and well cushioned too.  We tend not to use the shower on sites which offer that facility but have recently wild camped in her in comfort. She stood outside all last winter being buffeted by gales, snow storms and ice without any problems. Dry without any leaks at all. We hope to have her for some years to come. Main thing is, get whichever 'van' you do decide on checked underneath for condition of floor as well as chassis. MPG on our last trip to very hilly Isle of Harris was 22mpg which is not bad considering full water tank, and  two full gas bottles as well as chairs, outdoor table, windbreak etc.,   Good luck with your new van

Don't mean to patronise with my remark about checking underneath...sorry. Just we were almost caught out with a van with a floor that had started to delaminate  with damp.

Many thanks for the informative and constructive advice.
The comments about the body shell on the Exec. are particularly helpful and interesting.
With many years caravanning behind us, we have often wondered why manufacturers do not build caravans in this way.
We currently tow a 12 year old Vanroyce with a 1.9 TDI Rover 75. 47 mpg with van, 55 plus without.
We will notice the difference in cost. Both caravan and car are well balanced and recommended for comfortable and easy towing.
We are looking to change as parking the caravan is no longer an option now we have moved home.We are also reducing the kit that we take away with us.Do we realy need all those mod.cons?
All comments on campers wil be appreciated.

hi, I have recently got an autosleeperClubman GL which is very similar to the executive, I swopped from a mazda bongo mainly as my back ached with managing in the bongo - the autosleeper is much more comfortable with more room, full oven etc in fact more caravan like which I like but others may not. Its quick to pack up too. I have a big storage box on the back too which is a godsend as it fits table, chairs, chocks, and alsorts in.....
