We are researching our options for buying a motorhome having been caravanners for years. We're surprised how few second hand vans have cab air con. We wouldn't dream of buying a car without air con, especially for driving in France. Is it different in a MH e.g. more airflow because of the size of the vehicle or should we keep searching for one we can afford with cab air con? We're used to sleeping in a caravan without air con of course but driving in the heat of the day is a different thing altogether. Any advice much appreciated.
We have never found the need in our motorhome, but do agree that in the car it seems to be a must, another point that may be worth noting is the increase in fuel consumption, and from a relatively low base point the increase can be quiet substantial.
If we were to purchase another motorhome i personally wouldn't pay any extra for cab air con, i may be interested in a roof air con unit that could be used when on site hooked up, but again I wouldn't pay very much for the privilege.
Quite a lot of the newer models on the 2nd hand market (especially Transit based models) may have air con systems.
I have a 2006 older style Fiat Ducato based MH and this doesn't have a/c. I think at the time it was a hefty premium to have it added as being based on a commercial vehicle a/c wasn't something they sold in bulk so the price was over £1000.
There was a price pressure with cars as more and more people wanted a/c so the price fell over time.
I don't think the older vans with a/c are particularly reliable systems either from reading other posts on this issue.
The newer Ducato/Boxer models have better systems and more people are specifying the option.
Older models from more premium manufacturers and with larger engines (2.8 for instance) have a better chance of cruise control and a/c.
Car a/c was launched to the masses in 1960 and only in the last 10 years over here it has become more and more specified on vehicles so the commerical sector is lagging behind.
The sheer volume of a MH must make it an expensive option. If you weigh up the reletively small space of a car or chassis cab commercial, to that of an 'open' void that is a MH - you can guess it would have to work overtime to fill the void with air - or have a huge capacity (expensive) unit to do the job. Id say a fan would suffice for the job.
I appreciate its only blowing air about - but i dont think it gets over-warm in a MH anyway.
Just following on from Micks comments, a few people I have read about on MH forums say the a/c doesn't really get passed the cab area before it loses its usefulness for rear passengers.
There was mention of not getting 3ft behind the cab to keep their travelling kids cooler.
