Hi...

We've got a VW T25 camper van and the electrics have been put in by one of the previous owners and they're obviously not right.  They've put in one of those hookup things with the three plug sockets (I think they're aimed at tents rather than campervans!) then the 3 way fridge is plugged into one socket, etc.

How are they supposed to work?

The lights and radio are running off the leisure battery and if the battery is flat they don't work even if we're plugged into a hookup, I thought the hookup was supposed to "override" everything if you were plugged in?

Plus I don't think the engine running is charging the leisure battery, we've been told its wired so that the engine charges both the van battery and the leisure battery at the same time so theres no need to switch between the two.

Help??!! Any ideas...

I can imagine it as you describe it but without seeing it theres no real way of helping you unless you have abilty to do electrical work.

As you describe it, you have a tent ehu fitted & I am assuming it is in good order & safe. That will be ok in as much as you can plug into campsite ehu & plug your fridge etc into it. Leisure battery should be wired with a split charge relay so it charges as you drive, if it is not doing that then it is faulty. If you want leisure battery to charge off ehu then you really need to junk your botched tent ehu & fit a proper ehu & charger.

You could of course just buy a cheap trickle charger, plug it into your tent ehu & charge leisure battery as needed with that.

So you have a choice, Junk all existing electrics & have a proper system fitted to van. Or sort out your split charge relay & charge leisure battery on site as described.

If you leisure battery goes flat quickly once on site then it has probabley had it. If it is under seat it will probabley be just a car battery rather than a proper caravan leisure battery. Car batteries used as leisure batteries only last a couple of yrs.

It sounds as though a fuse has blown in the charge circuit to the leisure batteries - assuming of course there is a split charge system in place to charge the leisure batteries when traveling.

Electric hookup will only charge the leisure batteries if there is some sort of charger in place.  Don't just buy a cheap trickle charger.  Much better to get a 4 stage smart charger of sufficient capacity relative to your leisure batteries.  In general aim for 10% of the battery capacity.  So if you have, say, 2 x 110 amp batteries look to get a 20 amp charger.  This will charge your batteries from 50% capacity to full in a little over 5 hours.  If your leisure batteries are old they could well need replacing as they will not hold charge.

Sorry I haven't the diagram to hand, but I'll try to describe the circuit as installed in my van..

1. The battery charger / stabilised PSU is connected permenantly to the liesure battery.
2. The 12 Volt from the liesure battery is taken to the Common connection of a double relay.
3. The Normally Closed (1)connection feeds the 12 V caravan electrics via selector switch.
4. The normally Open (1) is connected to the Vehicle battery.

The other half of the relay is similar except that :
the Normally open(2) contact powers the fridge only.
the normally closed (2) optionally powers the caravan electrics.
the vehicle battery connects to the common(2) terminal.

In operation...

Engine Off - the relay is not activated, so either the Liesure or Vehicle battery feeds the van (via a SPDT centre off selector switch)

Engine running - the relay is activated so the Leisure battery is disconnected from the vehicle electrics and paralled with the Vehicle battery (charges it). The Vehicle battery supplies 12V to the fridge only.

nb. the relay coil is powered from the ignition lamp.

Works beautifully!
