hi all, can anyone recomend a gas detetor for my motorhome. im going to france and italy with my wife and 3 kids in a few weeks and have read some stories about people getting gassed and robbed! im not sure if im over reacting but with 3 kids in tow it might be better safe than sorry!!! there seems to be some cheapish ones on ebay but some are around £70 so im not sure which to buy, any info would be helpful.

I suggest you do some internet research before wasting your money. Scientific research suggests that there is no known gas that could be pumped into a motorhome to cause the effects as described in so called 'gassing incidents'.

The way to prevent yourself getting robbed is to take sensible precautions such as not parking overnight at motorway services or lonely aires & also not leaving your m/h unattended when shopping at large supermkts.

Hi Jake as tentz says load of rubbish the gas thing but do take care and keep stuff out of site. Also a cheap but good way to alarm your mh while in it or away is to buy the personal alarm atacks you can get for about a couple of pounds we have them they are hooked on to doors at the bottom so no one can see from outside and hooked on the step well in cab so if anyone opens doors it will pull out cord and set hi pitched alarm off ours also has a flashing light and i can assure you you wont sleep through them.

Hi as others have said, do a google search etc it isn't too long ago that some sort of statement was released from someone in the health service explaining how gassing would be nearly impossible due to different weights of travellers in the MH pets etc how on eartth could someone dispense just the right amounts of gas to make sure that everyone came round etc.

After much reading on the subject I feel the gassing issue is an urban myth.

EDIT

Have found the link for you hope it helps.

I am member of another forum and this was posted recently in respect of "gas attacks"

I was a policeman for 30 years and this type of reported robbery does not exist Not in the uk or as far as I am aware from all of the available intelligence or anywhere else in the world.

It is recorded - but if you look at the precise records they state the facts and an "OBNOXIOUS - GAS" is almost unknown in the statistics.

People may be robbed in their sleep because they left windows or doors open.

Simple as that.

They may not even know that this is the reason, and may report many other factors - but a quick examination of the scene may reveal if a gas was used at all (Police would take a blood sample from suspect victims who claim obnoxious gas attack, to ascertain if this was the case - (but newspapers do not report this fact when it is negative...That no gas was used - not newspaper worthy).

The gas thing is loved by newspapers who love hellish and sensational stories, and they will invigorate and re-invent this kind of stoyline.

It is also loved by insurance companies and companies who promote these types of alarm systems.

In reality, it does not happen - maybe once in a million, bit they do not give these stats..

People who are robbed in the night tend to not take the basic precautions and sometimes claim "unknown gasses" as their excuse. Did they close all windows- even in extreme climates? Did they fully secure their motorhome? Were all windows and overhead ventilators closed? Wsa the motorhome secure?

It's only the press that propogate such myths. Reality dictates that you take the basic precautions - much as you would as in your own home.

"Gas Attacks" - you chose.

Secure your motorhome/Camper and you wil not be a victim.. Basic security precautions will prevail.

Gas attacks - the excuse of people who don't take basic precautions.
