Hi

Were getting EHU and a leisure battery in our T25 and i'd love to hear peoples experience of using batteries in their small camper (doesnt have to be a VDub). Are they good for a few days use at sites without hook up? Is there anything to be avoided (hairdryers!!??). Any advice on getting the best out of them. Cheers.

What sort of stuff do you want to be running?

My water pump, lights and 2 12v sockets run off the leisure battery.

To get the best out of the lights you are advised to switch to LED bulbs as they use 1/10th of the power of standard filament bulbs.

The water pump doesn't drain a lot of power.

I do have a cheapo £13 inverter from ebay for running my laptop and/or ipod dock radio from 12v converted to 240v.

What do you use for lighting at the moment?

You should be able to go a few days without a problem on a 85ah leisure battery. Some people use solar panels (see maplin website) for boosting power but I haven't found the need. I don't use a great deal of power and we don't take a tv etc.

Ben

We have a leisure battery in our T4 and it runs the lights (flourescent) and fridge no problem for at least 4 days (the longest we've been anywhere without moving).

The mains socket (for hairdryers etc) doesn't work unless we plug into the mains.

Hi  Vickit, I DO not think your leisure battery runs your fridge!!! Unless your T4 is fitted with one of the latest absorbtion fridges.

It definitely does, it's a 10 year old Westfalia with the original Westfalia fitted coolbox style fridge, there's no gas option and no exterior vents and it stays properly cold even in 35+ degrees. Is that what you mean by the latest absorbtion style fridges?

Other than that it must be magic!

Vicki

After having a look round the web, I believe it's a compressor fridge, which works just like your normal home fridge and apparently they are much more efficient than the 3-ways when running on battery power.

The disadvantage is you can't run it on gas and you can hear it running (although v. quiet).

The leisure battery was replaced when we bought the van 2 years ago so it's probably in pretty good condition too.

Hi

Regarding hairdryer, I bought one specially to plug into socket for leisure battery but there was hardly any power in it at all.  Useless for drying hair!  The hairdryer works fine if plugged into cigarette lighter on dashboard but I am a bit wary of this in case it drains the battery and I find I can't start my van to come home!

Apart from that, leisure battery is fine for a few days running coolbox, water pump and lights.

Thanks for the advice/comments. Were on light use except that i use a cpap machine through the night due to sleep apnoea so i'll need to check out if that will work. Other than that a weekend away without a hairdryer or TV is do-able! I understsand though that an inverter will get a hairdryer going if missus is keen. Were going to get a split charge rthing and a trickle charge job......the EHU and leisure battery will be fitted at the same time

I've got a Danbury Dynamic which powers the compressor fridge, lights, water pump and diesel heater fan with its leisure battery. The fridge seems to be a key factor - usually I get 3 days out of it and the indicator lights say it's still good, but recently I got the red light after 36 hours and I think it was because the fridge was kicking in so much (I usually turn it down at night to reduce the chance of the pump waking me up, but forgot this time).
