Hi,
We are moving over from the world of tugging to having a motorhome!
Our thoughts are settling on a Hymer A class 6 berth possible twin axle as we need a seperate shower cubicle due to rallying a lot as well as two children and a yearly trip to Europe.
Left hand drive not a problem, budget is whatever we manage to sell our van for so up to £15 k i guess.
Would really appreciate pros & cons of this sort of motorhome from anyone who has them pls or indeed if anyone has similar A class that would fit the bill.
PS have had caravans for nearly 10 yrs so are ok with damp testing etc just need to know specifics on A class motorhomes pls.
Ta muchly folks.

Hi, Great choice for a first motor home! I have just spent 12 months looking for the right one, I'll try and give you a bit of a lift up, as it took me quite awhile before i understood what I wanted and what I didn't.
Firstly the model numbers do not relate to specific layouts IE a Hymer 544 can have a bench seat and dining seating for 4. it could have a middle kitchen or an end kitchen
If you want a shower then the 564 is the smallest to have a shower cubicle, they all have a shower in the toilet area but it's only the 564 onwards that has a dedicated shower cubicle.
Secondly "extras" the vans were sold with very little as standard, so the goodies IE, decent size engine with turbo is extra (you need the turbo) drivers door, Power steering, air ride suspension, cruise control, ovens (rare) aircon, extending bumper, bike racks and onboard LPG tank (for appliances not engine) are all extra so you will need to check and double check the specs of every van you are interested in.
With your budget you could be looking at 1992 to 1995 vintage, these were the best build years with light wood modern looking interiors,
Cambelt changes are vital if it can't be proven then budget to have it done
the S series have all the goodies on board, but cost a lot more, people rave about the million mile 5 cylinder mercedes engine fitted to some, but mpg is poor, if you want to run it on veg oil, then it must have a bosch fuel injection pump.
If you need any further help i'll try my best, incidently the one I got eventually was the 1990 564 despite having a budget of 23k.
Please do not be tempted to buy the bubble front versions as they do not hold there price as well, sorry to those that own them!
Also for the bigger longer models it can be difficult to get a pitch for anything over 22 foot, most sites try and plonk you near the main gate, when you have a long van, not good with the kiddies, and it is generally harder to find a parking space and your ferry price will be more expensive,
Good hunting!
Mike and June

Thanks Mike, Brilliant help.
My OH still fancies a B694 Tag Axle so the next problem is A: Selling our caravan & B; finding one!
I must admit I do like the classic Hymers with the wood interiors as they are a bit different than the usual motorhomes ans we never have the norm!
I will probably ask more questions once we have got rid of the van.
Thanks again
Caz

Thanks for the layout info enodreven - do they do any with bunk beds lol??
Mike - Hmm not surprised with your dealer that is one of the reasons we will not buy new again - their stinking attitudes!
Hope you get it sorted.
Just back from France & saw loads of twin axle vans & MH with no issues on site but to be fair we tend to only go to france for 2 wks a yr with the rest of the time on CL's & rallys in the uk hardly ever on commercial sites so size should be ok.
Will keep you posted :)
