You dont actually say what model your van is. There are a few possible answers to your problem
1. Although you were plugged into the mains, was your mains unit turned on also your charger. On many vans the electrics that supplies lights and power to the taps does in fact come via the battery and the the charger keeps that topped up.
2. Was the hook up point a twist and turn for on type and did you turn.
I think these two are most likely, rather than looking for a fault in the van. Dont worry we all drop clangers on first and maybe more trips out
